Route Conditions-- East-side Gully [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Route Conditions-- East-side Gully
East side of Checkerboard Mesa. Most of the route was like this in late March 2008. Expect bushwhacking and Class 2+/3 conditions in and around this gully regardless of snow. The direct gully is the best way because it is the least-choked with obstacles, but the snow, if present, will in several places be too steep and hard to ascend without ice axe and crampons.

Zion NP, UT-- 3/08

We've encountered some semi-intense conditions while trying to approach some of those east-side peaks in spring conditions.

Thanks, CP. It's easy for the uninitiated to think Utah=desert and expect hot sand all over the place. They are in for some surprises!
