Iconic RMNP Moment
An iconic scene in Rocky Mountain National Park.
A bull elk on the slopes of Flattop Mountain with Longs Peak in the background.
The Trough Route on Longs looks like it could be in good shape.

Great photo. I never tire of looking at elk. They are majestical, strong and smart.

Thanks. He definitely had all of those attributes. He was with a young bull, maybe two years old (?), who he seemed to be protecting. I cropped the young one out of this shot, he was standing off to the right. I felt that this captured the majesty better.

beats those I saw up at the Grand Canyon.

Hey, at least you captured a mountain in the
background, so I'm giving it 10/10 !

Thanks. This guy was big. It's nice that the Park Service put him in such a photogenic location!

Thanks Bob. I've spent a lot of time in RMNP but this was quite the lucky find. I had to move down the trail a bit to get Longs into the frame, but the elk patiently stayed put, not moving off until I had snapped a few shots.

It looks just like a scene out of Bambi. The one where his father stands like that.
Gorgeous photo.

Thanks for the comment Lolli. Appreciate it. He was actually hanging out with another, younger elk.

Thanks, it was a lucky deal. My friend was starting to take pictures as we were coming down on to the elk, with just some trees and distant valley in the background. I saw the situation and moved down farther and off to the side before shooting, so I could include Longs.
