Viewing the Tourons at Inspiration Point [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Viewing the Tourons at Inspiration Point
If you do the Clear Lake or Ribbon Lake loop counterclockwise, you emerge from the backcountry at a stretch of "wild" Canyon Rim. The trail goes along the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, without handrails, signs, or other signs of civilization - - it's easy to imagine what it must have looked like to the Hayden Expedition (and those undocumented trappers and Native Americans before them).

Across the Canyon is Inspiration Point, a drive-up location.

Same view, different experience.

June 2009.

So, you're saying there's actually a way to
avoid the Tour-ons?

I tried to avoid the Tour-ons at AZ's Grand
Canyon one time, and I had to take a 4x4 road
approximately 30 miles out to a place where
I could most definitely "ENNjoy The Silence."

There's ALWAYS a way to avoid the maddening crowds!

I think you can almost always avoid the tourons anywhere, just by hiking two miles. Half Dome is an exception, and the most popular trails in the Grand Canyon are probably, too. But there aren't too many other exceptions.

Thanks goodness.
