Cardenas Butte [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Cardenas Butte
Cardenas Butte (6269') from near Lipan Point (7300').

It was somewhere in the vicinity of Tanner Canyon, (east of the butte), where Europeans first "discovered" the Grand Canyon.

Despite the scenery, Tanner Canyon has some colorful legends.

It was called (at one time) "Horsethief" Canyon. It's reported that this
side-canyon was used by horse thieves to drive stolen horses across the
Canyon into Utah.

While inside the Canyon, the brands on the horses would be changed before
driving the horses out on the North Rim via what's now the Nankoweap Trail.

The Tanner Trail should not be used by any but the more hardened hiker and
ardent canyoneer!

There's NO water available until you reach the river.

A perfect "water-cache-point" along the trail is called Stegosaurus Rocks.
