Eiger South Flank over the Ischmeer glacier [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Eiger South Flank over the Ischmeer glacier
Enlarge the photo to see the climber on the ridge. It will give you a good perspective on the size of the walls. The windows of the Eismeer train station can be seen in the far background.

As I remember no rappel was needed 13 years ago. We stepped directly from the tunnel on to the glacier. (The windows at the Eismeer station are clearly shown above the snow).

Nice and informative picture!

Because of the receding glaciers, the windows are way above the glacier. If you take the first left inside the tunnel, you will need to rappel. If you continue all the way down to the end of the tunnel like I did, you can do it with a short rappel and a lot of down climbing. Global warming is really screwing things up.

mtybumpoTrain station?

Voted 10/10

I'm not from Europe so I don't know much about this place. There is a train station under the mountain in the rock? That's amazing! How long has it been there?

The original plan was to have the end station on the Jungfrau summit (4158m). Luckily that did not happen. Instead they stopped at Jungfraujoch (3454m) after sixteen years of work. The year was 1912.
