Machhapuchare in October 1979... [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Machhapuchare in October 1979...
Machhapuchare in October 1979 as we awoke to the sounds of donkey bells and dogs barking. This was the view from our campsite near a Tibetan refugee just outside Pokhara. This was the first morning of our 7 day trek to Poon hill and back. William Marler, Pentax Spotmatic F, Kodachrome 64.

What camera/film (if not digital) combo did you use to get this- nice!

I used a SLR Pentax Spotmatic F that I bought second hand in 1973, I still use it today excellent camera. Kodachrome 64 slide film. Scanned it on an Epson Perfection 1240U scanner with a rather limited slide attachment feature. Then it was cleaned up and colour corrected as much as possible in Photoshop 7 on a Mac. still getting the hang of this. I find areas are too red and flatten out.

I also had to eliminate a lot of dust and related crap. Tried to use the photoshop spec and dust tool but it elimiates some of the detail if you are not careful. A lot of my earlier subissions to Sp were scanned from prints that I had handy on my office wall. They are soft and the colours are faded when you compare them to the original slides. But getting the scan to look like your original slide is a challenge for me anyways. If I had tonnes of money I would send them all to a pro lab and hopefully get better results. Sorry for the long winded answer. Cheers William

Thanks. I would like to go back and redo the shot with both the old film camera and new digital camera. Then get it scanned professionaly and check the difference. Would be fun. Of course the Mioists would probably take them both. (•:

In 1979, I was still climbing at the mountains in Japan. After 13 years, I saw this image at Pokhara. Thanks for sharing my dear image!
