Overview

Langenfels

The Langenfels was a new discovery for me ! It is one of my last rocky discoveries, in the area of the Palatinate ... At the beginning, I didn't want to go there, because the destination wasn't at the program ! But, first when I saw the site, in his general view, my mouth was falling open ! And my eyes too ! The site is giant, very wild and adventurous ! The moves aren't easy, but the site seems to be very interesting ... So, I decided to visit him, in more details and I can only say, that I was very happy to do it ! The Langenfels is beautifully dominating the Wellbachtal valley, at the north of the village of Rinnthal and the main valley of the Queich (elevation : only 274 meters). The Wellbachtal valley is a very famous trafic pass, which connects the Queich valley and the Johanniskreuz. Near the Langenfels, another rock is dominating this very beautiful and savage valley : the Frohndellpfeiler ! Both rocks can be seen very easely, from the valley and the B 10 road. Good to know for later, for the access ... So, go !!!

Getting There

Langenfels

The first important information to know, is that, the Langenfels is good visible from the Wellbachtal valley and equally, from the B 10 road ! For reaching the site, you have to quit Rinnthal, in the western direction. You arrive at a cross, where you will take the right road (direction Kaiserslautern and Johanniskreuz). You have to follow this road, for 500 meters. Then, at your right, you will find a forestian road and a small parking lot. Be cautious, because there is too much wood and flora ! You can park you car here, near the Wellbachtal road. For the rest of the ascent, you have to walk by foots ! You take the northern forestian way, direction Almersberg. 400 meters after, you will see that the main way is doing a round corner on the left. At your right, you will find a second way, you have to follow him ! The ascent is unmarked ! 200 meters after, you will fall on a big degaged area and you will find the Langenfels, at your left hand ... The rock is popping out of the forest, with power and savagery ! In ascent, notifies the fact, that you are having beautiful views on the Frohndellpfeiler, another good climbing destination of the sector ...

Red Tape

Rötzenberg

Yes, there is a red tape, at the Langenfels ... Like too much others climbing rocks of the country, you might be opposing to publical closures, between the 1st february and the 1st july of the year ! This is done, to protect the nesting and the breeding of peregrines falcons. The Langenfels is less known by the climbers, to compare with others crags of the sector (examples : Asselstein, Rauhberg, Geiersteinfels, Münzfels, Bavariafels, Kuhfels, Friedrichsfels, Buchholzfels, Frohndellpfeiler, ... ). This is due to the fact, that the site is very isolated and wild ! The base is easy to reach, but the summital parts are very difficult to penetrate.

There are several important dangers, at the Langenfels :
- the total height is reaching 74 meters : a record in the Palatinate !!!
- the cracks and the chasms for reaching the summits are small and high !
- the progression along the walls is unsecured and unmarked ...
- and there is a big danger of TICKS !!!
