Sunrise on the east face of Nelion as seen from Point Lenana. The Howell Hut bivi box can be seen clearly just below the summit.

Hasn't voted | Hi Diggler,
"Monstrosity" isn't the word I would have used. The summit hut on Nelion is a great and very welcome service to the climbing community. I spend an awesome night up there on my trip to Mt Kenya.
It's more of a bivi box than a hut and is actually tucked away quite discretely. The reflection of the early morning light just makes it quite visible in this particular shot.
cheers,
ben

Voted 10/10 | All idealogical standpoints about its existence aside, I would certainly think of that much weight, material, & work as a "monstrosity" if I were carrying it up there myself to build it. I'm certain I would most likely hop inside if it were free while on the mountain as well! | | Posted Jul 1, 2004 12:35 pm |

Hasn't voted | The construction was certainly an impressive effort by Ian Howell: if I recall correctly, he did 14 solo (!) trips up the Normal Route with the hut strapped to his back in pieces.
It has been refurbished recently with new matresses and insulation and is quite habitable. There's some evidence still of the fire a few years back where the insulation caught alight - wouldn't wanted to have been on the mountain on that night!
