We ran into some confusion on...
We ran into some confusion on our Sneffels climb from Yankee Boy Basin. We parked much lower than the jeeps shown here (12,400 feet!!!) and walked up from below. At the base of the tarn, we saw a sign marked "trail". This trail is not the trail you use for Sneffels's southern routes! This trail seems to lead to Gilpin Peak. We wouldn't have taken it, save for the advice of two knuckleheads who told us with confidence that it would get us to Blue Lakes Pass. In fact, we had to traverse an entire basin full of talus and steep snowfields to get to the pass.

Aaron JohnsonAlternate Trail

Voted 10/10

Morgan-Some folks do use this variation and cut across the tundra just as you did. Others start even lower at the gate just past the restrooms in Yankee Boy Basin.

Some like me drive to the end of the road and start there. Folks ask, "then what's the point?" But I won't get into that here.

Thanks for the informative annotated photo!

Heh-heh, no matter what you do, someone will find fault with it. Cut across the tundra -- you're spoiling the precious wilderness. Drive to 12K' -- you're not climbing 3000 vertical feet.

I must have seen 100 people in Yankee Boy Basin...on a Tuesday!
