This picture is taken from the Zapata Falls trailhead parking lot looking generally north/northwest across the eastern side of the San Luis Valley floor. The valley floor has an elevation of roughly 8,000 feet.. The Great Sand Dunes, which is Colorado's newest National Park, rise roughly 800 feet from the San Luis Valley floor with Mt. Herard behind to the right rising roughly a mile above the valley floor and the huge Crestone Group which contains five fourteeners (four are visible in this picture - can you identify them?) is off to the left. This picture was taken in late May of 2004.
