Bivied on...
Almost Home!

Bivied on Alberta. Photo by E. Holland.

15 minutes from the tent, we were this close (thumb and forefinger held up) to climbing the peak in a day. Darkness makes finding the correct ledge leading back to high camp a hazardous affair.

Yes, that's a 2-oz mylar space bag. I don't leave camp without it. (but then, my unplanned bivies number over 70)

Cheers!

Thanks! and thanks for the vote. By the time we decided to bivy it was around 1:30 am, so dawn was less than 4 hours away.

Water bottles still froze though.

I guess there comes a time when you just have to give in and rest... but it must not take too long before you are REALLY cold? Could you sleep or rest at all or just give up trying to make your way in the dark? I have not had to do it yet, but have come quite close!! December on Lava Falls in the Grand Canyon -- that would have been miserable!

Went something like this: Suck on a starburst, snuggle closer to partner, nod off, shiver, find another starburst, suck on starburst, check time, snuggle closer to partner, nod off, shiver...

Decided to sit down and bivy the second time I almost stumbled over an edge while looking for the route.

Lava Falls... I'd hate to flip there with dark coming on!

Happy new year.
