This is what a very large portion of the hike looks like unfortunately. Head-high devils club. (June 04)

This shot brings back a lot of memories of bushwhacking that nasty stuff. Combine devil's club with slide alder and you have a combo that makes western washington hiking so much fun.

I love the way devil's club tends to grow on steep mud. When your feet go out from under you and your hands fly out to grab anything, there it is. Diabolical.

Gloves, Eric, you have to wear gloves in that stuff. I bushwhacked down from Cannon Mtn (Enchantments awhile back and I hit devil's club most of the way down on the route I had picked. The only saving thing were the gloves I had packed along. Don't leave home without them. Some eye protection doesn't hurt either. : )

Isn't it great how the stalks remain in winter like some sort of medieval battle axe? This photo just reminds me of a few recent encounters in the Gorge. My hands are stinging just looking at it.

Yup. I've done the same, plus whacked a lot of bushes on search & rescue missions. My belay gloves are plain, leather work gloves. Devil's club can't hardly touch 'em.

I learned my lesson for sure after this trip! I found some ski gloves that work great. I tested them out on Hall Peak when I was sliding down the steep slippery hill and had nothing else to grab on to.
