Climber taping up on the...
Climber taping up on the ledge at the base of the 5.9 crack, Flame, named after the man-size outline of a perfect candleflame in lichen. Derek & I were surprised how interesting it was just to get to the base of Flame. The route itself almost did us in. If the leader had fallen below the belay ledge (which seemed imminent much of the time), he'd have been over a rope-length up, with overhanging, drippng moss in front of him.

Thanks! It's one of my favorite shots. The serenity of it belies the intense, desperate struggle that followed. (Desperate for me, anyway.) Kind of a calm-before-the-storm thing.
