Safer variation of the Las... [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Safer variation of the Las...
Safer variation of the Las Latas route (photo taken by myself on December 31, 1998). You can also head to the area just right of this photo to climb up or down. Since the glacier has receded La Canaleta has become very dangerous and deaths have occured. We watched several bus-sized boulders crash down the gully on that day. That same night, a huge rock avalanche occured which we (Kimberly, Russell, Jan, and myself) could here all the way from Las Cuevas (several thousand feet below and several kms (miles) away). Paul and Leslie were camped at Las Latas and reported huge crashes throughout the night, and not much sleep because of all the noise from boulders crashing down the Caneleta. The moral of the story is don't take this route, especially since a safer route is nearby.
