Vern Garner descends through the old burn toward timberline. The tundra in this area is badly damaged by the heavy traffic it has had to bear, human damage at its worst. While it makes for a great descent, this is one case where I support a reroute to allow the mountain needed time to recover. This is probably the Forest Service's "environmental concern" listed on this page. Fall, 1997.
