Crosses

There seem to be a lot of crosses on Alps summits. )

Re: Crosses

Definitely. And not just on proper summits, but even on lots of minor bumps and on viewpoints that only appear to be summits when viewed from the valley below. In fact, even on proper summits, it's not uncommon to find the cross on a spot where it can be seen from the valley instead of on the true summit. If you really want to be on top of a peak in the Alps, you've got to look for the highest point yourself and not simply head straight for the cross.

That said, I have to admit I like all these crosses, wherever I find them. It's just a feeling, though if I try rationalize it, perhaps it is that they give me a feeling of accomplishment when I reach them. Come to think of it, I haven't been up the Greitspitz and visited that cross yet...

Re: Crosses

I agree with Rob, I like all these summit crosses as well, I always take a summit shot with them & I'm always a bit dissappointed if there isn't one on a mountain. Fortunately, most peaks I visited, including many less-famous peaks, have a summit cross. They come in all sizes and it's certainly not the case that the highest or most famous peaks Always have the largest crosses. This one on greitspitz is one of the largest I've seen so far.

Re: Crosses

Ha! Never seen a cross on any summit in California. I guess these Yankees over here in America don't go to church enough!

In the Alps

a summit cross is the normal thing, and in the Rocher de Roquebrune near Frejus I know a summit with three crosses! I have been to peaks in weather where you had to cling to the summit cross in order not to be blown down in the valley, and generally they are a very good support when taking shots with long focus lenses. I'm all for them!

Re: In the Alps

Couldn't agree more Ejnar.. I'm curious about the summit with 3 crosses, does it have an SP page?

Re: In the Alps

I don't think it has a page, but I put it in the summit cross album!
