Within a mile of the trailhead, the Red Eagle Lake Trail passes next to St. Mary Lake. Three mountains are visible across the lake, from left to right: Red Eagle Mountain, Mahtotapa Mountain and Little Chief Mountain. The Gendarme, a prominent rock feature on the northeast ridge of Little Chief, is visible at far right.
