It seems to me a side of Grandes Jorasses worthy to be known. In the photo from the more usual point of views, Grandes Jorasses have a different aspect | | Posted Oct 5, 2005 5:46 pm |

Hasn't voted | Congratulations on POTW Livio! It's a great shot, just could have been little bit sharper :-) | | Posted Oct 5, 2005 11:50 am |

Hasn't voted | Thanks Sasha, but I didn't like the previous sharper version and posted this one (it's a cropped version of the original frame) | | Posted Oct 5, 2005 5:28 pm |
| jhp1004 | Great photo of a great mountain | | Voted 10/10 | but I would so much like, if all you Italians could write and comment in english. It would be nice to be a part of the correspondence - eller er det måske for meget forlangt, der er jo ingen af Jer der forstår, hvis jeg skriver på dansk!
Ciao

You are right, but some of us are in difficulties with the English and then also the answer is in Italian. Other times in effect English could be used. May be some danish fellow can understand Italian as well ;-)

Ciao

either you write in English( is that ingen) or I will write in Danish?
Does eller er mean either or? | | Posted Oct 5, 2005 1:00 pm |
 | | jhp1004 | Re: Great photo of a great mountain | | Voted 10/10 | "ingen" means "no one" - "eller er" means "or is". I'm not in a position to threat anyone that I will write in danish. I'll just be laughed at. I just think it's kind of unpolite to be in a forum with many people with different languages, and not use the language that most people understand. Even if it is difficult for one self. This is what I wrote in danish: "......,or is it asking too much? No one will understand if I write in Danish"

| Lupino | Great... | |
Voted 10/10 | ...photo for a great mountain. Congratulation. The quality of your pics is always very high. PoW is the consequence! | | Posted Oct 5, 2005 11:44 am |

Hasn't voted | That's right: the merit is mainly of the subject. Mine is to have been there , with a photocamera pointed in the right direction, before Grandes Jorasse were hidden by the clouds.
Thankx, Paolo! | | Posted Oct 5, 2005 5:23 pm |
| signorellil | Wonderful picture | | Voted 10/10 | Congratulation Livio! What can I say? As the maintainer of the Grandes Jorasses page I'm absolutely delighted to see "our little mountain" :) feature in the PoW with a picture of such astonishing quality!
And and even more happy to see "under the limelight" a picture not of the "usual" north face, but of GJ least know side - the East Face, who overlooks the Freboudze glacier and the high Ferret valley. As you may already know, on the right (bordering the huge silouhette of the Cassin spur) there's the Hirondelles ridge and the border with France - on the left, the towers of the Tronchey ridge. From the glacier border to the summit the face in 750m high.
For those with little knowledge of GJ climbing history, this face was first climbed by Giusto Gervasutti and Giuseppe Gagliardone the 16 and 17 July 1942. The route is rated ED+ in the UIAA scale, with sustained free climbing up to French 6b/c and aid rating around A2+. It was an immense breakthrough, because until then, never in the Western Alps such a difficult, technical route had been climbed. It remained the most technical rock climbing line in the MB massif unitl 1962, when US climber Royal Robbins and Gary Hemming opened the direct route on the West Face of the Drus.
The Gervasutti route was repeated only three times between 1942 and 1974, and so far has seen just an handful of ascents.
Livio, congratulations again. "Montagnes valdotaines, vous etes mes amours", as they say! | | Posted Oct 5, 2005 3:54 pm |
