Rough weather is waiting... [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Rough weather is waiting...
Rough weather is waiting around the corner. These and other weird looking clouds were racing over the sky the whole day. Forming, disappearing, re-forming and changing at a high pace.

Late the following night a violent blizzard arrived.

Photo shot from in between El Fraile and El Muerto, on the way to Ojos del Salado.

I have never seen similar.

Me neither, or I should say; I have never seen that kind of cloud formations in any other place than the Puna.

When there's a storm approaching, these kind of clouds start to build up.
It's a 100% warning for strong winds.

Yes, it was the calm before the storm. First i saw the clouds forming and then the first gusts arrived. Later on that day, the wind had picked up a lot and that night was insane. I was lucky to find a good shelter for my tent. I went for the summit of Ojos del Salado the next day. Was a bit afraid to be blown off the summit ridge.

It was in 2005. The date must've been the 28'th or 29'th of March. That's in the end of the summer season and the first fall storms arrive. The one that hit me was brutal. I was lucky to find a deep river bed where I had good shelter for my tent. The wind knocked me down twice on the summit ridge of Ojos del Salado the day after.

I may add some more photos from that day later. Lots of weird cloud formations before that storm.

Thanks for the comment and the vote. Beautiful, but also a warning of what was coming up ---> a violent storm arrived later that day.

the most interesting cloud formation I've seen...looks like that front part of the cloud just popped off the back part. Great photo!

Thanks Brian.
I may post some more photos from that day. The sky was a riot of clouds "battling each other".

It's one of my favorite days in the mountains ever. There was a war going on in the sky and you knew something really nasty was coming up. I was lucky to find a reasonably sheltered valley for protection in the end of the day. Must've been hurricane force winds that night.

I can imagine it! At the end of summer... so, at least, it wasn't too much cold during the night?
