Old Chute Variation [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Old Chute Variation
This photo shows the route pretty well. Ascend the Hogsback about 2/3 of the way up and then traverse left below the rock formations (two climbers on it). Past the last rock formation, the obvious Chute opens up above you. Ascend it (can see two more climbers in the Chute) to the ridge and follow the ridge back right to the summit. Great picture, looks like you had some nice conditions. I was on Dog that day and it was cold, cloudy and windy. I remember doing Hood back in the late 80's and the Hogsback was considerably east of where it is now. Seems like the old chute variation is the way to go now.

I like those high res shots with detail. It would be really cool if somebody did a shot like that with a 4x5 camera on a tripod and with slide film, then used a scanner with high dynamic range...

At first the shift confused the hell out of me until I read the comments. :-)

So I have a question Brian, since I'm climbing Leuthold in a couple weeks.....am I to understand that folks are pretty much all descending through the old chute now? The Pearly Gates look a little gnarly.....thanks!

Yeah, at least when I was there a couple weeks ago, we did not see anyone in the Gates. It looked like vertical mixed rock/ice, pretty heinous. It might have changed but you should be able to tell where climbers are descending as you will pass the Old Chute on the ridge over to the summit from where you will top out on Leuthold.

When are you attempting Leuthold? We were actually going to do that route the day of this pic but we thought it was too warm. I've been over to try Leuthold about 4 times and always backed off due to ice fall. hoping to maybe give it a shot Presidents Day Weekend again but we'll see.

Good luck on your climb.

Wow....that's wild how things have changed shape up there...your picture really captured that. I'm taking a few guys up there on the weekend of March 3rd-4th....when you say icefall, were you concerned about up through the couloir, or coming down off the headwall onto the upper Reid traverse? Hopefully we get a good weather window then, otherwise we'll push it back later into March.

I meant ice fall coming down the couloir. I've done Reid Headwall and was rained on with small ice so that wasn't too bad. I've done the traverse a few times over to just below the Hourglass and turned back due to a continuous sounding stream of ice in the couloir. I can never seem to find it in good shape (or else I need to learn how to climb with a shield).

Thanks much! Was happy it cleared up for a while and I had a chance to get out and up something. Dunno about you but I am chomping at the bit to get out more around here. May need a Smith trip soon.

I just recently climbed the Old chute. It didn't quite look like that...No fresh snow.
