Clark's Nutcracker [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Clark's Nutcracker
A Clark's Nutcracker sitting on an ice coated tree at Bear Lake, trailhead for many climbs in Rocky Mountain National Park.
The bird was very cooperative, waiting until I moved to position the sun directly behind him. He turned his head in profile, let me snap the picture, then flew off.

Nice!! Has a painting like quality. Was this shot with a point and click digital or with film. Your use of depth of field made the picture even better!

Thanks very much. This was shot a number of years ago with film, either Ektachrome of one of the Fuji flavors. In either case an ISO 100. I used a 200 mm zoom, which helped keep the shallow depth of field, and aperture priority, stopping the lens down to its nearly smallest aperture to help reduce flare.

The original slide looks much better than the scan, of course.

Thanks again and happy holidays, Nelson

It's always amazing to consider the kind of temperatures that birds endure night after night, huddled in a tree, bush, hollow, or burrow. Those little critters are tough. Glad you like the shot, I was lucky he cooperated.

Thanks for the comment. It was the right place and time, and I was lucky the bird held still while I changed lenses and positioned myself to capture the shot. Happy Holidays!
