ForgottenLore  Sucess!

We hiked down into the crater, swam in the water, and hiked back up.
In some parts the route was washed out. Wear good hiking shoes. Careful on the way down and back.

Quilotoa crater rim and summit (Monte Juyende)  Sucess!

After hiking for 3 days from Sigchos to reach Quilotoa town, we spent the following day hiking around the crater rim and going down to the lake and kayaking. At the time of our trip (December 2017) there was no charge to enter the town. We stayed 2 nights in Quilotoa town. The route around the crater is approximately 9.5 km and 690m e-gain. The high point is Monte Juyende at 3930 m and it is marked with a sign. The route has great views and is definitely worth doing. The following day we hiked out to Tigua and got a bus back to Latacunga.

Beautiful Views  Sucess!

The only hike I got to do in Ecuador...this time! Beautiful views and would be a great acclimation hike if you're heading up to another mountain. I made the hike in just under 3 hours because I was hurrying since my wife was waiting for me at the viewpoint. Leisurely pace would be 4 hours for a fit person.

Did this hike on our rest day in between Illiniza Norte and Cotopaxi. Awesome hike.

down to the lake  Sucess!

Nice hike. I agree, the dogs are the biggest challenge. I heard later that the trick is to pick up a rock: they are used to being stoned and when they see someone bend down to pick a rock up, they run away. At least so I heard.

Rim  Sucess!

Hiked the rim in about 5 hours at a leisurely pace. Really cool area. Nice weather. If we had more time, I would have liked to kayak in the lake.

From Zumbahua  Sucess!

Long, long walk...at some point i got out of the road looking for a trail, got lost for about 15 min and after that found the little village on top of the crater rim...hiked down (big mistake for someone with a damn never ending cold hehehe) and after that hiked up again. Got a bus ride back to Quito and that's it. Tired as hell....but, fantastic views!

Route Climbed: Crater Rim Date Climbed: february 2010  Sucess!

Hiked around the Quilotoa crater rim, thereby traversing Volcan Quilotoa. Fantastic views and great atmosphere. Continued hiking all the way to Chugchilán, which is a long trip, but definitely one of the most gorgeous hikes I have ever made!

Down the crater

I wanted to hike the whole rim, but didn't have time since the last bus back to Latacungo supposedly leaves at 3pm (it then turned out that you can get to Zumbahua for 2.50 USD, from where there are more buses to Latacunga). It took a while to get there. So I just hiked down to the beach at the crater and back up. Very scenic ride to get there too!

Where is the true summit?  Sucess!

Is the summit the summit looking thing about 1/3 of the way around counter clockwise from Quilotoa? We hiked the whole rim, definitely recommended.

Barefoot Walkabout  Sucess!

Funny, I didn't really think of this as a peak until now, but it certainly is a distinctive volcano. I camped down at the crater for two nights. In between, I hiked up and around the entire lake, partially at lake level, partially on the rim, and partially in between. The kids working down at the lake were super friendly. Don't miss the impressive canyons near Chugchilan if you end up heading over that way.

Route: Crater Rim  Sucess!

Nice high altitude hike. Heloise (FRA) and I started at 2:10 pm after we hiked up and down from the lake.

Beautiful sunset with few intervals of rain. It took us 4 hours to hike the whole crater rim.

Crater Rim  Sucess!

Beautiful landscape, for a very nice walk.
Just a few dogs annoying us here and there. But they're just there to protect the fiels and the sheep nearby from any intruder.
