We ran into this creature...

We ran into this creature (~10" long) in the middle of the trail between Bottchers Gap and Skinner Ridge as we descended from Devil's Peak. He posed for photos for a while - February 1, 2003

Alligator Lizard

Thanks. Now I have the music from "America" running through my head, "alligator lizards in the air". ;-) Check out the tail. Someone caught that guy before.

I think it is an alligator lizard. Skinks typically have a lot of blue on them.

OK, OK, you guys made me look this up this critter. He is a San Francisco Alligator Lizard a subspecies of the Northern Alligator Lizard. Skinks are much more smooth scaled so they almost look shiny. Information from Peterson's Field Guide to Western Reptiles and Amphibians.
