NikmanAre there any tarantulas ...

... in lower grounds in that area?

If there are tarantulas in lower areas it can happen that a bird catches one of them but gets bit a few minutes after giving the tarantula a ride.
Death comes within minutes to the bird and the tarantula finds itself in a very uncommon area.

How big is that one in reality?

No tarantulas here, this guy was a little bigger than a quarter (legspan). But thats interesting, hadn't considered a bird carrying it.

Some kind of wolf spider - hunts on foot, not from a web. Note the two large forward-facing eyes, and the very large fangs.

Might also have been carried on the wind - they can "balloon" on a length of silk, though it's usually the young that do this. But 5000' really isn't very high for a spider, it probably lives in the rocks nearby and just wandered in the wrong direction.

it is not that uncommon to see rather large black spiders on the upper part of glaciers, where they live on small insects that again live on algae living in the snow.

I do too, while I do it sometimes, I try not to take that "one picture" that everyone takes of the same things.
