My buddy and I decided to get out of Las Vegas for a weekend and decided to climb Nevada's second highest. We ended up hiking up a rock slide gulley then hitting the ridge and following the trail to the summit. Pretty nice views, and it was the highest I have ever hiked to before.

Great weather besides the relentless winds. GBNP is a great place that is spare of crowds!

Thought the worst of my cold had passed, but Mr. Wheeler made it known that I was mistaken. Got passed by several folks on the way up, but finally made it. Great views. Shared a bit of summit time with the Head Ranger at GBNP - nice guy.

4th or 5th trip up in the last few years, but never with this much snow - Snow level all the way to the trailhead on Memorial Day weekend! Epic, sunny day in Great Basin.

Tyler Thigpen, (Birmingham, Alabama) and RJ DePond (Cambria California) were the earliest to the summit this day. It was very windy but magically beautiful. The round trip took 4 hours and 45 minutes.

There were a lot of clouds near the summit and there wasn't much of a view until it cleared up. Also, there were a bunch of deer along the trail.

Started at the Wheeler Peak Trailhead (8.6 miles roundtrip). An easy hike considering nearly 3,000' elevation gain. Beautiful views from the summit. Wheeler has a commanding presence amidst the many 11K+ peaks in the area.

Easy walk-up. First ones to the summit that day. Had to skirt some snow drifts at mid-mountain and we it took a little bit of navigating to return to the trail but it was not hard at all. I was shocked at some of the people climbing this. Saw a kid climbing it in a Purdue basketball uniform. The ridgeline was really windy.

Bagged this peak with Redsplashman and Chris. Also got Jeff Davis Peak. Caught a great glissade down the north slope of Jeff Davis. I've been wanting to check out Great Basin for a long time. Some of these peaks have the look and feel of Sierra Peaks.

After a light snow; trail was full of ice.

On Oct 17, 1970, I was nearly killed in a snowstorm above timberline -- in New York! So this was an anniversary.

Total 4x; twice in one day.

Loved it! Highly underrated peak in a highly underrated National Park. Worth a trip to the middle of nowhere. The last 1000 ft. or so is brutal. Amazing view from the top.

Pleasant and scenic route in one of the least crowded national parks I have ever visited. I hiked down to the shores of the alpine lakes on the way back from the summit.

Winter ascents in Nevada are different than in Utah. You do not need ski gear, avy gear, ropes, harnesses, ice axe, and crampons. As mentioned by appachedino, it was so incredibly windy. I was making a 45 degree with the ground and the wind was holding me up. Sweet summit, skied down via moonlight.

I got a new 4 sesason for X-mas and decided to put it to use. We snowshoed/skinned from upper Lehman Campground to Wheeler campground for the night. The next morning after sleeping in a bit we ascended the ridge and were met by 90 MPH winds that threatened to blow beanies right off of yyour head and knock you into the rocks. Pebbles and ice constantly got in the eyes and at some point the mountain wind stole my glasses. Yet we made the summit and watched a beautiful sunset on the way down and enjoyed a nice moonlight snowshoe back to cam. Excellent views from the top of a very isolated area.
