Route Climbed: From Baker lake Date Climbed: June 1990
My group combined this peak with Baker and Pyrimid Peak. We camped at Baker Lake. In the night a boulder came off the Wheeler Massiff and tumbled for what seemed like 10-12 seconds befor hitting the water on the other side of the lake. We thought that was the end of it, but the crashes turned into "SPLOOSHES AND SPLASHES," as it continued to move through the water toward our tent. Just at the point that I was jumping out of the sleeping bag and getting ready to run for my life, the boulder finally stopped. That was fifteen years ago and I still remember that incident with vivid recall.

Beautiful day on a beautiful mountain. A little breezy on the saddle and snow on the trail from the saddle to the summit. It wasn't icy, so it was a great hike.

Awesome looking peak offers awesome views from the top. Who would have thought this would be Nevada? Non-technical climb, easy up and back. Saw a crew of deer just hanging out above the saddle. Signed the mailbox registry at top. Wish my dogs could have come.

Nice hike on a clear day. Too bad the aspen leaves had dropped already. I stayed at the campground just past the trail head and had plenty of mule deer walk through the night before.
I climbed the peak on memorial day using the standard route from the campground. The snow was really soft and I wish I would have brought my snowhoes. Going up early in the morning it was windy and I did a bit of postholing to get to the ridge. The view from the summit was awesome. The whole Snake Range was covered in snow and I had the top to myself. Coming down I met the only other climber I saw that day (Scott from Las Vegas). He made the summit about hour after me. The trip down was like swimming in spots it was so soft (I was warned). It was well worth the extra effort, the scenery is very nice this time of year. After I got back to the campground I drove to Bryce followed by the Grand Canyon and Zion. I would like to try Moriah Peak 12,065 by Hendry Creek approach next time.

Hiked Wheeler via the standard trail in Aug 2002.
In Sept 2003, I climbed nearby Jeff Davis Peak (12771 ft) then crossed the saddle to Wheeler.
On June 12, 2004, I summited Wheeler via the trail, dropped down to the south saddle and crossed over to Baker Peak (12305 ft) then returned and re-summited Wheeler. Tough day but a great time!

Awesome is the only adjective I can use to describe the view from the summit. Only saw 5 others all day and although it was windy on the ridge, it was still on the summit. What a worthwhile summit. The register was in a mailbox.

First attempt in 1997 aborted due to high winds (pretty typical of this peak). Returned in late '98 and finished climb (despite high winds again, and a dusting of snow). Wind chill of about zero. Left SLC at about 2am, drove thru nite, climbed peak, and was home by 9pm...long day, but worth the effort!

I climbed this mountain in mid October of 1999. I was the only one on the mountain that day. The wind was blowing hard and it was cold, but I managed to take in the views from the summit for over an hour.

Spring ski tour w/five friends. Beautiful, remote & uncrowded place. Summited & skied the NW couloir 5/18/02 then returned past Teresa Lake. Next day climbed & skied the Jeff Davis north face via the Bristlecone trail. Fine spring ski weekend. We'll be back again next spring w/skis.

After a morning of bouldering at the Volcanic Tablelands near Bishop, CA, I drove across Nevada on Route 6 -- a very desolate road. I hadn't done any research on Wheeler Peak, so I had no idea what type of climb to expect. When I reached the small town of Baker just outside Great Basin NP, I ran into an information board that had data on ascending the Peak. I found out that the standard route is just a simple hike that starts around 10,000 ft and ascends 3,000 ft in about four miles
The crux of the ascent turned out to be driving to the trailhead. The road was paved and not too steep, but my car doesn't do well at altitude. After 12 miles of my car sputtering with intermittent power and me enjoying the waffles-and-maple-syrup smell of a new leak somewhere in the cooling system, I reached the trailhead at 5:50pm. My plan was to "car camp" that night, then bag the peak in the morning. I had just consumed a jumbo bag of Funyuns for dinner and was about to crack open a can of generic Pork + Beans, when I got the urge to stretch my legs a bit. I threw a jacket and some water into my pack and began running up the trail. After a couple minutes of running I was feeling great, so I decided to continue to the summit that evening.
The first mile-and-a-half of the trail is a graded path through groves of aspen and some meadowy areas. At about 10,700 ft, the trail reaches treeline and follows a gentle ridge to the summit. I made it to the summit in 1 hour and 17 minutes, hung out for a half hour, then began the descent. I got back to my car before dark.
