Which alpine flowers are these?

I couldn't determine which plant this is. I'm pretty confident it's from the Rose family (Rosaceae), but I'm not even sure whether it belongs to the Potentilla or the Geum subfamily, let alone which species it is. Let me know if you have an idea. It was deep in the Ochsental (see Lat/Lon), at around 2500m or so. The area around it was mostly rocks, with patches of grass here and there and a variety of low plants and shrubs. I didn't measure it, but I estimate that the size of the flowers was about 3 cm. 23 July 2013.

Great pic!!

It should be Geum reptans, in Switzerland also called Gletscher Petersbart, in German Kriechende Bergnelkenwurz. I saw many of them in the Glarus Alps this summer; they are among the pioneer plants on barren slopes fixing the soil with their many sprouting branches.

Re: Great pic!!

Thanks!

When trying to find out the name, I looked at various species of the Geum subfamily, but the the Geum reptans species wasn't among them. But I just googled the name, and both the flowers and the description fit the bill very well, so that must be it.

Re: Great pic!!

I have to look them up as well. I use two good Internet sites:
www.alpenblumen.net and
http://alpenblumen.gabathuler.org
So far they never failed on showing me the right species. It is quite easy: you search for flower colour and month of bloom. Then you browse through the pictures of all the alpine flowers which fit in your search.
