HP #28  Sucess!

Nothing to see along the drive there, but summit views were actually cool!

HP #19  Sucess!

Beat the imminent snow due in 5 days. Surprisingly no wind considering how windy it was on Black Elk earlier in the morning.

The land owner to the east seems to be installing a fence along his property line. This will make the trail obvious as all you will need to do is follow the west side of the fence line to the gate.

Larvitour Stop #32  Sucess!

I climbed up on an absolutely beautiful morning--moderate winds, scattered clouds, great view from the top. The trail was a bit overgrown in places, so I was glad I'd worn long pants. No rattlesnakes, but I did have a little run-in with the goats grazing in the field beside the trail (fortunately, I was rescued by a pickup truck--the owners?--that came up the road and shooed them away).

Slippery in places  Sucess!

This is a much easier hike than the mountains in states to the west. But it is not without its risks. On the way down my wife slipped on the loose dirt and sprained her wrist. Trekking poles recommended.

HP 34  Sucess!

Had to crawl under barb wire next to rotting rattlesnake carcass but other than that beautiful day. Had a beer at top and didn't see any live snakes. Few other gents on mountain.

Great Views  Sucess!

Went to Devil's Tower but thunder/lightning drove us to come up with another idea so called for permission. Easy to find, turn left at sign that says 69 ST SW, drive to mailbox (donation box) and park in field to the right of the farm road. Very windy on top!

5000 Mile Roadtrip  Sucess!

STHP # 17 for me. Part of a 5k mile road trip through much of the Northern States. Did 4 total state high points and visited a ton of National Parks and other scenic stops.

White Butte is amazingly beautiful in mid-June. We had a cloud-dotted windy day. The prairie grass blowing in waves, no insects, perfect temperature. Couldn't ask for better.

I hiked it with my 18 mo. old and 7 yr old while my wife stayed in the car with my other son. My 7 yr old then hiked it with my wife while I had the other 2.

Far from Everything  Sucess!

The drive made you feel so far removed from the rest of the country with hundreds of miles of grasslands and cattle. I saw a high point sign with an arrow and turned on a road before the one that summitpost describes and I ended up in some rough back country private road. I punched through then made a turn to get back on the correct dirt road. I parked at the mail box, it appears they dont want you to drive down the road to the abandoned barn building. I had called the owner earlier and nobody answered. 1 hour to the top, and 1 hour down. No rattle snakes, though I did pluck a tick off my t-shirt that I somehow managed to notice. The most interesting part of this hike was the buttes and the terrain... had never seen anything like it.

No Rattlesnakes!  Sucess!

Despite what a lot of people have said, we saw no snakes. Got up and down in an hour. Stay to the left!

Climbed the highpoint and then stopped at a store in Amidon and got a sweet T-shirt of White Butte.

3rd of 3  Sucess!

Did a 1900 miles (round trip) from Orem Utah through Wyoming to three state highpoints, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Viewed Mt. Rushmore, and Devils Tower WY, along the way. Lots of driving. I love the prairies and must say White Butte looked like something you could see in Alberta.

Fun day but cold  Sucess!

Fun hike from the mailbox. Please respect landowner wishes and do not drive beyond this point. Trail easy to follow. Wind chill was about 32F, something for mid-September. Wet but no precipitation. The "hill climb" on the bentonite clay was very slippery. I quipped that I now have a "white butt" thanks to "White Butte". #42 for me, #29 for Lillian, #13 for John, #12 for Barb.

Beauitful Views  Sucess!

Beautiful hike up White Butte. It took us about an hour to get to the summit, leaving from the old farmhouse at 6:20 PM. We took many pictures a long the way as it was a beautiful evening and many wildflowers were in bloom. Thankfully, we encountered no snakes. Highpoint #33.

We called the number listed to get permission, but no one answered so we left $10 in the mailbox at the beginning of the road that leads to the old farmhouse. The trail was well marked; no issues getting to the top.

Great day for a State High Point  Sucess!

State HP #38....Beautiful day with mild temps and a slight breeze. Who knew North Dakota had these hills? Contrary to many reports, we didn't see or hear any rattlesnakes! It was also very easy to find! Just a walk up to the top of the Buttes!

Highpoint #24  Sucess!

My second stop on my weekend jaunt to the highpoints of SD and ND while on a project assignment in ND. Paid my courtesy fee to the owners, hiked to the top without anyone else around. Good views (for North Dakota).

HP No. 25  Sucess!

Summited with my two daughters (No. 13). Had a little trouble finding the gravel road but only a few additional minutes to arrive at the newer, but abandoned house and out buildings (no one home). Drove down the lane to a point just beyond the old farm house, an open area which we hoped would minimize contact with snakes. Crossed over into the pasture near this point, per the Winger's book, and had a nice hike all the way up. Very nice day to hike, with great views from the top. We were the only climbers today. I noticed a walk thru gate about a half mile into the hike which would have saved us some work opening the drive thru gate further back. Wary of snakes all the way but did not see or hear any. Great to be half way finished with the list. This was HP 5 of 5 on this trip.

White Butte  Sucess!

Beautiful country. I really enjoyed this hike. Didn't see a soul except two porcupines.
