| I did this hike with my husband a couple of weeks ago. Great hike with fabulous views of the Sierras. We were not able to drive all the way to the Barcroft gate due to snow on the road, so we ended up doing a 22 mile slog (roundtrip). It was pretty cold and very windy. We were exhausted by the time we got back to the car, but we had a great time. | ||

| Took advantage of the fact that I was working at the White Mountain Research Station and shaved 4 miles and a thousand feet off the round trip. It's a straightforward walk-up with no technical challenges at all. A real treat is to do it under a full moon as the elevation and lack of trees make for a tremendous amount of light when the moon is out. Another helpful tidbit... one weekend each year around Labor Day, the research station has an open house where they let you drive to the Barcroft Station at 12,500 feet. That allows you to shave off the 4 miles and 1000 feet on the trip. The only downside is it's very crowded that day and ranks low on the solitude front. | ||

| This was my last training hike before going to Africa to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. Turned back early in the hike, due to extreme dizziness/vertigo (this turned out to be a sinus infection, which was causing an inner ear/balance problem... did manage to get it cleared up before I went to Kili). I enjoyed this area, especially the Ancient Bristlecone Pine forests, and will go back next summer to finish the climb! | ||

| Brian Frederick | Route Climbed: west ridge Date Climbed: Early 80's feb. and march ![]() | |
| Tried twice, made it once. First try was in march by south ridge variation. Frustrated by dry bushwacking in woolies and looking across at the snowy sierras. Hit snow and camped + 10,000'. Got hit by storm at 12,000' and turned back. Next year in feb. did north ridge variation., again dry til high up. Reached summit after fighting winds and blowing snow along the ridge to find fantastic views but it was 5 degrees and blowing 20-25, didn't stay long. It's good to hear about the camp being fixed up, almost makes me want to go back. | ||

| We rode the bikes this time. It took just 2:30 to summit. It looks pretty stupid pushing bikes the last 500 feet of elevation. But a great ride out! This is our second time on the Mountain PJC | ||

| My first 14er! Happy with my performance at altitude. There was a really cute research student with a group at the summit hut (they drove up in a 4runner). I let her put me on a pulse ox, my o2 sat was only 74%! | ||

| The drive through the Bristlecone Pine Forest was quite an experience; we drove up as the sun was going down, and the Bristlecone Pines were quite a sight. The hike wasn't terribly exciting, but there are nice views if it's clear and it's a great way to spend time at 14,000 feet. Next time, I'm bringing my mountain bike! | ||

| A comfortable ascent, especially after a long wedding weekend in LA. There was a Japanese family near the summit with two sons aged no more than 10 and 12. Way to get them started early! Spent the night before in the State Park primitive campground on the way in - good place to acclimatize. | ||

| Walked solo to the summit in April using the main route. 54 miles round trip (4 days) since the road was closed. I was surprised when I heard dogs as I got near the research station. There were 2 guys staying through the winter, observing the dogs at altitude, and offered me a beer on my way down. Awesome! ---------------------- I've got two thrwarted attempts on the West Ridge also. Need to get back there... | ||

| Tried to climb it Xmas 1974 but turned around at Barcroft with bad weather coming in. Spent the night on top Xmas '76 with Fritz and David. Spent the night on top in the summer of 1975 with Markle and Fritz. Climbed it in Oct. 1989 with JPL hiking club, summer '74 with Fritz and ???. First tried to climb it in the spring about 1970, but snow blocked the road just past the Bristlecones and we only made it as far as Barcroft before we tired out - we had driven all night from San Diego to get there and had no sleep. | ||

| After a failed attempt on Ritter the day before I decided my ego needed a peak with a high probability of success. This was the mountain for me then! Tough road, passenger cars beware. Amazing views of the eastern Sierra on this clear day. Well worth the time if your in the area. | ||

| Hiked with Balajisv and Brian under a fairly clear sky. The hike to the summit, including picture taking and messing with the fat marmots on their rock pile, took me a minute or two under three hours. Skipping the switchbacks on the summit massif is clean if you take the decent use trail on the far left side of the face. Route Climbed: Barcroft Road Date Climbed: July 19, 2003 Sucess! This is an easy hike, though you should acclimatize before hand as it is about five hours of hiking at altitudes > 12K. The most difficult thing about this hike was the drive to the gate. | ||
