What a treat! I was only told it was a 'walk-up'. But the 14 miles round trip w/3500' was wholesome. Went the day *after* they open it to Bancroft...so I had the summit and return to myself. What a treat, what a beautiful mountain, unlike any other 14er. Bike would be the way to go.

Cold/windy start at the gate, but the hike up was awesome with just a long sleeve shirt, pants and hat. Very comfortable the entire time. Summit was actually still and great temperature, cool and comfortable. Views were stellar in all directions, awesome 360 degree views in all directions. Labor Day Weekend, so quite a few people, but it actually was nice and met some cool people. Summited with wife and 2 friends, all had a great time.

Finally made it to the summit after having to bail in a snow storm a few years back. Great views from the summit! I really like the landscape. We saw lots of marmots but no big horn sheep.

Bagged this one several times. Took both my sons up on different occasions to bag their first 14er. I love the White Mountains and this peak never disappoints.

Mountain biked from the Barcroft gate. Enjoyed a windless summit with beautiful views. The ride down took us a little over an hour. Mountain biking down was an awesome experience for a non-mountain biker, I wish I could do that on every summit.

Acclimation hike for a trip up Whitney the next day.
Slept at Barcroft Gate. (Note to the Koreans who got up at 4:30- your tents were *not* soundproof)

Pics are here.

Date Climbed: Aug 30, 2009

Rode mountain bike from Barcroft gate to the base of the peak then stashed it and walked the rest of the way up. It was tough riding even that easy road due to the elevation (and the fact that I'm not really a mountain biker) but it was great having the bike for the way down. Would have had great views across the valley to the Sierra but it was pretty smoky due to fires.

Rented mountain bikes in Mammoth, camped at the trail head, rode up & flew down. Wooooo hooooo! Thanks, Phillip for being my partner in crime on this one.

Cool, easy hike. Met some other Sper's up there. Good views, a little hazy, but good nonetheless. 3rd CA 14er.

I loved the moonlike landscape, very bare and raw. Plus from this range you have an amazing view of the entire Sierra! We camped at Barcroft gate and attempted to hike in the morning, but because we drove to this altitude (3600m) from 50m in the same day, the symptoms of AMS made us quit. We will be back more acclimatized, after at least one hike beforehand.

Hiked to approximately 13.7k with Jaimie before she totally ran out of gas. Her highest elevation yet though, and she did great. The views were tremendous on a nice clear day.

mrchad958th California County Highpoint  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 19, 2009

My final summit completing the highest point in all the counties in California. The views of the peak were outstanding in the morning, but clouds and smoke from the Forks fire limited views from the top- and the lightning chased us off. Had a flat at the trailhead but went ahead and had a blast on our 2nd trip down Silver Canyon without another spare anyway- got some cool video of the creek crossings.

Hiking California's county highpoints has got to be one of the most enjoyable tasks I've taken on. They are all so remarkably different... each one a unique, interesting, and memorable experience.

Funny coincidence! Did you have the Tacoma? We were parked right next to you in the Merc ML. We noticed the open hood and rather flat rear passenger tire but had no idea who the truck belonged to.

mrchad9Re: 58th California County Highpoint

Yup- in the Tacoma. Rangers told us the open hood helped with Marmots, the day before we drove by the trailhead and it was a funny sight to see a dozen vehicles all with their hoods open. I still think it likely does nothing though. We knew the tire was going flat during the hike- I was just happy we made it to the trailhead and could deal with it afterwards.

Luciano136Switchback road?  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 19, 2009

JUL 19TH 2009
Hiked the road from the Barcroft gate; this must be the most indirect way to get to a summit; holy switchback! Well, guess it's a road and not a trail. Either way, nice hike! A bit tough coming down since we were breathing in smoke from the Bishop Creek fires. Lots of thunderstorm activity as well; we had the first rumbling at 1:30pm but luckily got back to the car by 2:30pm. A lot of people still behind us though; hope they made it safely because there was quite a lightning show on the drive out.

OCT 7TH 2006
Jeep Road - Great start with horrible end

Went up on Saturday (Oct 7th). Snow started about halfway between the observatory and the switchbacks. Some parts of the road probably have a foot of snow. It started snowing pretty heavily and we turned around just before the switchbacks as we got worried the truck might get snowed in (only 2wd). The snow was almost all the way to the trailhead, then there was a break and then another part of the road had a good layer. It was about 23 degrees at the trailhead at 4pm.

Then the trouble began. Made it past the snow but had TWO flat tires at about 10k. About 6 hours later we were towed back to Bishop. 10:30pm, no car, still no food and not one single motel room available. Finally made it to Mammoth with a shuttle to get a room around 1:30am. "Fun" day. Got back home Sunday 8pm, a day late. I was pretty annoyed.

mrchad9Re: Switchback road?

I was in one of the groups well behind you, everyone made it out but true the lightning did get fairly interesting as the day went on. One boomed pretty close just as we crossed the ridge and started down to the Barcroft facility.
