Wierd to have throngs of tourists eating packed lunches. They couldn't figure out why someone would hike that mountain...

I am proud to say that I have never reached Whiteface's summit by car or chairlift. I have only hoofed it to the top to the 'amazement' of the tourists at the top. This hike had many great views and was a worthwhile hike. I definitely recommend the Marble Mtn approach as it shortens the approach to the mountains by almost one mile.

My partner and I left our car at about 08:30 in the morning in a drizzle that developed into an ice fog once we got above 1000m. The trail was solid and not too icy and there was only the occasional post-holing and it was quite mild out perhaps –1~5c.

After about two hours of we were at the junction with the memorial highway and the wind was blowing at about 60kph, and we were in low-level cloud. We also met two other climbers who had come up the highway. They were sitting in the full force wind having lunch and obviously feeling its ill effects as one of them was shivering and they were debating on weather they should go any further. We directed them to a site a few meters to the left of the highway were it was out of the wind and actually quite sunny and after a few cups of hot coffee they warmed up and followed us up to the top.

As soon as we go onto the East Ridge we were above the clouds and had a great summit push with the wind blowing, the sun shining and the occasional wispy cloud streaming by. The ridge was icy in spots but crampons were not really necessary and we topped out in glorious sunshine in only a few minutes, followed closely by the other party.

Whiteface was the only high peak to be fully in the clear that day and we looked out on a beautiful sea of white clouds with Marcy and Algonquin occasionally poking though. After a quick lunch headed down and with a side trip up to Ester we were back at our car at 19:00 on the dot. One of the better winter assents I have ever had in the Dacks and the first time I climbed this peak from the east.
