How often does climbable ice form up in that part of the country?

Not often-- our winters average above freezing, but we sometimes get cold snaps in late January or in February that allow climbable ice to form. As I said, though, it isn't often; the last time before this year I saw really solid ice in this canyon was back in 1997. There's always winter ice, of course, but rarely the kind that supports reasonably safe climbing.
