My first two trips to Shasta were up this route. Both times in 1977. The only beta we had was the (outdated) 15' Mt. Shasta quad and a book that focused more on fishing spots than on Shasta approach routes. The first trip, much of the route was shrouded in fog until we burst out of it near the toe of the Whitney Glacier. Until then, there had been a lot of thrashing through steep brush and confused hiking along old discontinuous forest service roads.
Good report. The pictures are excellent and really capture what I remember from those long ago days.
Thanks for the feed back. It is a shame that the trail has fallen into such disrepair, though it sounds like it was not very good in the late '70's either. I hope that the Forest Service and the Mount Shasta Trails Association can work together to restore the trail, at least to the falls.
