Route: Wildrose Peak Trail  Sucess!

A quick buzz up the trail to the top, with wonderful views when I gained the ridge. Good weather that day, with no snow on Wildrose, although Telescope was blanketed. A good warm-up in Death Valley.

Wildrose Peak Trail  Sucess!

Well maintained, not too long (4.2 miles up), so lots of people. Beautiful views of the Sierra and Death Valley.

March 4 with Bruno and Cameron  Sucess!

Not a bad alternative to Telescope. Fun hike, good temps. It was cold in the morning though. I wouldn't do this one in the summer. It is hot enough at the top campground.

route climbed: standard route via Charcoal Kilns  Sucess!

I led a subgroup of our scouts on a hike to the top of Wildrose Peak in patchy snow conditions. From my photos I have identified the following successfull summiteers: Steven Smith, Nathaniel Wilson, Andrew Blau, Robert and Doug Bowman, Austin Sneed, and Adam Danise

Road closed to Telescope - Wildrose instead

We were supposed to do Telescope Peak on Sat 03/04/06 but ended up doing
Wildrose Peak.

We called Death Valley before we left Friday (03/03). They said it was
snowing at the Wildrose campground (4100feet) and they closed the road past
the campground about 1+ miles before the kilns. We weren't very warm in our
tent Fri night (22 degrees). We got up around 5:30am and started driving up
the road; there was snow and everything was frozen solid. Telescope looked
pretty plastered with snow. As the road was closed, we only drove past the
sign to the kilns and decided on doing Wildrose Peak. Looked like Telescope
had good snow above 9000 feet with about 1 foot around 10000 and maybe 2
feet on top? We probably would've made it up to Mahony flat and Telescope
but it would've been a looong day and we were not supposed to drive that
far.

Wildrose was fun though. There was snow right at the trailhead and we lost
the trail. We x-countried to the saddle and picked up the trail again
there. Views were endless! The snow was melting when we came down. Above
9000 feet, it remained cold and it looked like the snow up Telescope wasn't
melting at all.

Definitely a peak worth climbing; you can see Whitney to the west and
Badwater to the east! Watch out for mountain lions; we saw multiple prints
in the fresh snow.

Started from the Charcoal Kilns at the late hour of 3:18PM. Power hiked to the summit arriving there just before sunset at 4:40PM. Too cold and windy up there; stayed only 5 minutes taking one picture and signing the summit register. Left summit at 4:45PM. Jogged down and got back to Charcoal Kilns at 5:41PM (car-to-car: 2hrs 23min). A dry winter so far: trail is completely snow free.

Very enjoyable hike to the summit. Filled my pockets with a winter's supply of pine nuts (unless that's illegal, in which case I'm only kidding). Didn't notice a summit register, but then I never really made it a point to look for one.

What a relief to get out of Death Valley, where the temperature was in the upper 90s. The trail is pretty easy going. There were patches of snow near the top, but it was easy to walk around the big ones, and to step right through those I couldn't walk around -- without getting my feet wet. From up there, it looks like it will take several weeks for the snow to recede from the North slope of Telescope Peak.

We were roasting in the valley after a few days of hiking around and were looking for a way to cool down for an afternoon. This hike was perfect...much cooler up in the mountains.

A nice trail with great views down into the valley and the salt pan below. This was my fourth trip to D.Valley and the first time I made it up into the mountains....loved it so much I came back the next year to climb Telescope. Wonderful view!

Solo stroll to the top. Clear day with great views of the Sierras, Charleston and White Mountain Peak. The trail was completely snow free with only a few snowbanks visible near the trail. A nice warmup to Telescope.
