Via Ben Lomond  Sucess!

10/12/2014 Skyline Trail to Ben Lomond and on to Willard.
7/19/2013 Started at the Skyline trail in North Ogden. From Ben Lomond I continued onto Willard Peak. I lost count of the number of mountain goats I saw between the two peaks. They were all over the place. Returned back to Ben Lomond and made the very slight detour to Chilly Peak on the way down. Great hike.

Lots of Mountain Goats  Sucess!

Drove up to Inspiration point, 9,422 ft, then wandered over to Willard Peak, 9,764 ft, and continued on to Ben Lomond, 9,712 ft. Ascending Willard I spoted one goat, coming down we spoted a herd of 12, which ran away, but when we reached them again there was at least 25 or 30 of them. I have never seen that many mountian goats at once. On the drive out we saw three mooses in Perry Reservoir.

Feels like cheating  Sucess!

The drive to Inspiration Point takes some time, but when I consider the other hiking routes it's a great "short cut" to the peak. Saw some mountain goats after starting our way down from the peak. Great views.

First CoHP  Sucess!

Easy drive to Inspiration Point - good road, high clearance a must, 4WD not required. I read that the road was very rough but it was not. Ridge climbed from Inspiration toward Willard Peak. Routefind from the NW to top. Deep crevasse on Willard! Continued on to Ben Lomond for lunch. Took the lower trail West and below Willard back to IP. Saw several Mt Goats. My first County High Point.

Snowy northern slopes  Sucess!

Scrambled up from Willard Basin to the north, despite the lingering record snowfall from winter/spring. A snow drift 10 feet deep and 75 yards across still covered the road 1/4 mile from the Willard Basin campground, so I started from there. Kicked little steps in the snow (I love heavy snow years) up the headwall above the pond to the ridge, then finished the easy walk through the rocks and vegetation to the summit. Great view in every direction, beautiful summer day, absolutely calm on the summit. Glissade down the cirque headwall back to the pond was a blast. What a beautiful way to spend a Saturday morning.

Skyline Trail via Ben Lomond  Sucess!

Between Ben Lomond and Willard Peak we saw about 50 mountain goats, and by following a few of them off the trail we made it straight to the summit. The views down over Willard Bay to the west were awesome. See "Skyline Trail" trip report for details.

Willard Peak  Sucess!

July 2011 -- Climbed via the Skyline trail and Ben Lomond. We saw a lot of mountain goats, and we followed them to the summit.

July 20, 2013 -- Drove to Inspiration Point and then hiked to the summit with my dad and brother. Once again, there were a lot of mountain goats. Afterwards I mountain biked down.

Long Day  Sucess!

Started at the North Ogden Trailhead. Between the 20 miles traveled and the snow that had accumulated over Ben Lomand and Willard, I was tired by the time I reached the car.

Only one more CoHP to go, Eccentric Peak.

We hiked this one from Inspiration Point, seeing 30 some odd goats just to the west of the peak.

Included Ben Lomond as well  Sucess!

Camped in Willard Basin after climbing Bull Mountain. Drove to Inspiration Point and ridge climbed to Willard. After Willard we climbed the easy ridge to Ben Lomond. We saw 100's of mountain goats on the west face of Willard and Ben Lomond

North Ogden Divide  Sucess!

Topped out from the divide with my 12 year old son, wife, and brother in law. Still some snow and we had to negotiate some sketchy snowfield traverses right below the summit. Also had to do some route finding, but managed. Huge rattlesnake right below the summit. It was very slow and lathargic and hardly seemed to care that we were there. Saw a goat as we were topping Willard, but it managed to sneak off without anyone seeing where it went. We were a little slow and took just under 12 hours round trip summiting BL twice (coming up, and on the return)and took a long lunch break on Willard. First county highpoint in my home county.

GO UTES!!!

County HP #2  Sucess!

Amazing rocks up top. But I definitely wasn't fist-punching the air when I reached this summit like I was when I did AF Twins 4 days ago. But check it off the list. Combo'd it up with Ben Lomond. Ben Lomond is the celebrity of the ridge, and Willard seems to be the rough and rugged forgotten step brother. I didn't even find a registry on top of Willard.

Mountain Goats Galore  Sucess!

Hiked from the North Ogden divide. Did Ben Lomond then Willard. I also saw a lot of mountain goats. Didn't start until noon so I was hiking the last hour in the dark.

North Ogden Divide to Ben Lomond to Willard Peak  Sucess!

A long day at 21+ miles but well worth it. Should have read Moogie737's post before we went - wasted a lot of time, backtracking and effort getting to Willard from Ben Lomond!

... from Mantua  Sucess!

Make sure you take the road slow, but it's cleared all the way to the top.

Three Good Peaks in One Afternoon  Sucess!

The road up from Mantua is in terrible condition and req'd. ~ 45 min. to cover the 7 miles. I parked ~ 1 mile below the Willard Basin saddle and first hiked to Inspiration Point. This is a relatively easy hike along the road that also passes by Willard Basin campground. It's a good alternative if you want to include this peak and also want another route to the Skyline trai. However, as of 7/1 there were still several trees across the road and frequent snow to cross. From Inspiration Point the Skyline trail is relatively flat to Ben Lomond Peak except for the final few hundred yards. Going this way from Inspiration Point be sure to take the left route at the first fork. Whether you hike to Willard Basin Peak on the way to or from Ben Lomond I think you'll need to routefind from the Skyline trail to the WB peak as I looked and couldn't find any existing route. There also were several mountain goats below and south of the Ben Lomond peak.

Drove up the road from Mantua and hiked about the last mile. Great views from up there. The lake was completely full and Pilot Peak in NV was visible.
