This fire was burning on the east (Absaroka Range) side of Yellowstone Lake and, if I remember correctly, some of the islands, in August 2003. At first glance, I thought this was a tornado. It was a truly spectacular sight, but surprisingly few people joined me at the shore to witness this. Perhaps the light rain and the fact that it was dinnertime accounted for that, but still-- do the tourist masses really have as little imagination and soul as I think they do?

Nah, they were probably just scared for their lives. | | Posted Sep 12, 2006 7:03 pm |
| Bob Sihler | scared | |
Hasn't voted | You're right; they probably were. The bits of ash floating down here and there probably made them think the Apocalypse was upon them.

Voted 10/10 | Kind of scary too. I just returned from the Absaroka Range. We had to leave early because all the smoke was making it hard to breath. Hiking up, it was clear but hiking down, you couldn't see more than a couple miles. | | Posted Sep 30, 2006 1:29 am |

Hasn't voted | Thank you! I can relate to your story, too- I had a similar experience in Glacier in 2003 (have some photos and a trip report if you're interested), and I know how it's nice and blue up high while you cough below.

Voted 10/10 | I like both shots a lot, but I think I like this one better -- give it an 11! The portrait layout adds to the drama of the cloud. | | Posted Feb 15, 2007 2:42 am |

Hasn't voted | Thanks-- it was an awesome sight. I still can't decide which one I like better. I like the composition of this one better, but I like the colors in the other one more. | | Posted Feb 15, 2007 5:21 pm |
| skunk ape | Two great shots! | |
Voted 10/10 | I agree, both pics are great, Think I'd running with the rest of the tourists! | | Posted Mar 3, 2007 12:37 am |

Hasn't voted | Thanks-- no need to have run, though; the fire was many miles away, separated by the lake. All that told you it was real, aside from that plume, was falling ash. | | Posted Mar 3, 2007 1:07 am |
| Kerstin | Beautiful and scary | |
Voted 10/10 | This is a sight I hope to never see in my home town of South Lake Tahoe. But I feel it's inevitable with our current crowded and under-burned forests. | | Posted Apr 20, 2007 11:40 pm |

Hasn't voted | You're probably right, but I hope you're wrong. It's the same way all over the country, even here in the East, where Georgia and Florida have gotten it bad in the last few years. | | Posted Apr 22, 2007 5:47 pm |
| donhaller3 | do the tourist masses really have as little imagination and soul as I think they do? | |
Voted 10/10 | There is that. One of the things that bugs me about National Parks, people seem to follow only routes , car, bus, foot or whatever is programmed for them. If it's not in the guide brochure, it doesn't exist. Rangers, docents and guides with shrill voices, or the casette equivalent, in art museums too, or even in Japanese Gardens, their little herds of docile babbling sheep following them.
End of rant. | | Posted Jun 23, 2007 11:33 am |

Hasn't voted | You mean there's more to Yellowstone than stopping at every roadside geyser basin and creating traffic jams anytime something with hooves or paws is sighted? The horror! | | Posted Jun 24, 2007 3:34 pm |
| lcarreau | Yep ! | |
Voted 10/10 | Do what I do ... don't even go to Yellowstone.
Find a lonely ant's hill in the desert, AND make a mountain out of it. Take some photos ... create a few trip reports. Learn the ant's language. Let Nature take it's own course. You'll be so GLAD that you did! | | Posted Nov 1, 2007 8:55 pm |

Hasn't voted | I love Yellowstone too much not to go. But it's not too bad-- just leave your car and walk for about 10 minutes! I hear you about the desert, though-- amazing country, and very rewarding.
