nickw1Up Ehrwald, down Reintal  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 25, 2014
Climbed the Zugspitze with two friends (one with son) last week. Original aim was to do the Hollental route, but due to the hut closure and not everyone being confident on doing it in a day, we opted for the Ehrwald route as being the likely shortest in time. Started 0700 from Ehrwald station off the first train from Garmisch. Early parts of the climb not that impressive being along mud tracks and up ski slopes but perhaps at 1300m things improved to a nice and quite steep mountain path. The path wound its way up to the ridge under the cable car with good views back to the Ehrwald valley and also north towards Eibsee and the mountains beyond. Just before the cable car pylon be careful not to miss the waymarked "mini-via-ferrata" route off to the right - don't keep on the main path as it just ends. A little while later we arrived at the Wiener Neustadter Hutte for a small coffee break and then cut across a rocky area to the start of the via ferrata, which looked alarmingly steep from the hut. As it happened though, once we got closer it really didn't seem that steep at all, and in fact with the aid of the steel ropes/spikes was doable without clipping in. Interesting start as it goes through a small cave.
The steepest bit goes up maybe 50-100 metres then you bear right up the rock slope, still protected in parts but generally much easier. Weather had started good, cumulus clouds started building around 0800 or so but luckily by midday there was no real sign of them developing much. After a rather leisurely climb we reached the ridge and turned left to the developed area and the summit at 1330 (two of us an hour later - we'd made a snap decision to do it the first day everyone was here due to poor weather forecast for the weekend and so some of us were tired!). Weather was variable, clear views down to Garmisch but cloudier to the south.

After eating at the Austrian cafe three of us made our way down by cable car or train but I was mad enough to carry on and attempt to descend to Garmisch via the Reintal leaving the summit at 1500 (with a view to descend out of the clouds and turn back if it looked thundery). Luckily it did not and I carried on over the Zugspitzplatt - really quite an easy, leisurely walk with lovely views - and on to the Knorrhutte (stopped for tea) and at a leisurely pace, with pauses for dramatic views down the Reintal, on to the Reintalangerhutte for a beer at 1830-1900.

Could have stayed the night but felt that now I was out of anything remotely technical I decided to push on to Garmisch to meet the others for a well earned beer at the end. Continued down the Reintal (still with dramatic mountain slopes either side) to the next alm/restaurant just over an hour later at just gone 2000.

All had gone well so far but I'd misread the map and underestimated just how many miles of forest roads there were from there back to Garmisch. A good 8 miles at least I'd have estimated - this postamble (or preamble) is something of a downer for the Reintal route - and even doing it in a military-style march (it was starting to get dark and the best scenery was behind me) I only arrived at Garmisch at 2200.

So maybe a bit mad to go up and down in one day - but I still enjoyed the scenery. The Ehrwald route was perhaps not as good as that part of the Hollental I know (below the Hollentalangerhutte) but still a worthwhile climb and a good scramble beyond the Wiener Neustadter Hutte. And yes I know the Zugspitze is commercialised but it's been on my to-do list for a while and doing it and the Watzmann after previous unsuccessful attempts (as well as other peaks like the Hochstaufen, Daniel and Kramerspitze) means I think I've had a good holiday!

I climbed this peak with a friend via the Höllentalroute on a beautiful autumn day. Great treecolors in de valley, nice snow on the summit and klettersteig. The glacier was a bit icy so we fortunately didn't bring our crampons and ice axe for nothing. It was a long day from hammersbach to the summit. The klettersteig was sometimes covered under the snow which created some tricky parts. We summited just before sunset and slept on the platt. We had the route and the summit for our selves! We stood up quite early to watch sunrise from the summit. Magnificient views. The route down to Ehrwald/Eibsee was also beautiful, but early in the morning with some icy parts.

Had an awesome time climbing this high point from Hammertal. The entire trip is beautiful. Got some crazy looks from the Germans because I traversed the glacier without crampons (not recommended) but quickly made friends with them after their initial shock. ran into a bit of a traffic jam above glacier but it was fun to chat with the fellow climbers. Toasts abounded on summit with BERGHEIL being bellowed at the top of our lungs. Then ate at restaurant before heading back down via ridge route. LONG DAY!!!

Five hours climb from Ehrwald. I prefer this route on hot summer days, as this is completely in shadow.

It was a wonderful trip after a night out, since I started very late from Ehrwald (after a trip to Osterfelderkopf from GaPa). I slept in my sleeping bag underneath overhang at the place where there is a bench with (supposedly) nice view over the valley. I came there in deep night with my headlamp at 9:15 p.m. I wanted to sleep in the Wiener Neustadter huette, but could not then find the way further in fog and in the dark, so I slept there. The next day there was a wonderful inversion - clouds were solely in valleys underneath. I came to the huette, ate there, rested for a while after a night out and went on to the Klettersteig. It was actually quite easy. The only obstacle was the fresh snow. For the way back I used the cable car. It was a wonderful trip for me.

Unfortunately not the time of year for climbing. Still I wanted to visit the high point of Germany. Without any true effort on my part, it might be only fair that I couldn't got to the true summit cross which was 5 or 10 meters higher. I could see a way to get there but the unconsolidated snow covering the ferrata helped me decide not to try it.

Even with the people on the summit the Höllental is worth it.

Started from Ehrwald and attempted this. Too much snow on route, 3 feet covered the via ferrata cables. Then descended and took the chairlift.

Started from the parking lot at Kreuzberg at 6 o'clock. Superb weather and many people on the route most of them starting from Höllentalhütte. Reached the top after 6 hours. Had planned on climbing Jübiläumsgrat the next day, but weather was not too good, so I rode the train down in the afternoon.

rggThrough the Höllental  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 15, 2007

There was no snow on the glacier. That was just what I had hoped for, because now I could easily avoid the crevasses. On my way to the glacier, I saw some people returning, looking unhappy - I believe they had wanted to cross the glacier without crampons, but that was virtually impossible. There even were big signs at the Höllentalanger Hütte saying that you would need them.

The climb was beautiful, but the summit experience is something else. I didn't stay long, and continued to the Knorr Hütte.
