"As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life - so I became a scientist. This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls."

San Antonio, West Baldy, and Mount HarwoodA great winter snowclimb with Bryan. During the ascent we had to dodge huge potentially fatal ice bombs falling from the trees. On the summits, 45mph winds were whipping up major spindrift. We descended from the Antonio / Harwood saddle in a sudden white out and the slope turned out to be icy and sketchy. I fell twice and had to arrest with my axe. We should have brought crampons.

Shoulda brought the splitUp Procrastination Chute, down the Backbone. Wish I would have brought my splitboard as the snow was still surprisingly good after the extended warm/dry conditions. Very large group of people in the bowl later in the morning, possibly an instructional class?

Ran up on a beautiful dayIn town for my sister's XC meet---ran up the regular route, chilled on the top (it was cold!), and then came down the devil's backbone route which was INCREDIBLE. Great views, great pictures, great running!

Baldy with snowUp via ski hut and down via the devil's backbone. It was absolutely still up at the summit for a bit - absolutely NO wind! That road sucks at the end sucks. I still wish the ski lifts were running that day.

Spectacular ridgeMount Baldy is the beautiful, bulky, and bald head of the San Gabriels. There is a nice alpine forest present on its slopes, but the summit, however, is nothing but rocks. Winter time brings forth good amounts of snow, which makes both the Baldy Bowl and the Devil's Backbone excellent arenas for mountaineers.
Have done the Devil's Backbone from TR and San Antonio Ski Hut Trail back down in August.

Numb toes!Climbed via Blue Ridge route. Lots of loose rock on the way, some class 3 scrambling. Did 3 summits: Pine Mountain, Mount Dawson, and Baldy. Round trip in little over 9 hrs. Very strenuous hike, all the travel is either up or down the slopes. Good, comfortable boots will make all the difference.

Had to come backWas back in the area on business again so had to head up to Baldy after meetings. Starting from the ski lift parking lot, did the trail under the ski lifts up to the notch, then the backbone. Up in 1:45, down in a fun 0:45. Car to summit to car: 2:30. Ran into only three persons on the trail on a Thursday evening.

Father's DayI told my sons that all I wanted for Father's Day was for them to accompany me up Mt. Baldy. They agreed, and after a quick drive from San Diego & breakfast at IHOP we were on the Manker Flats trail by 9:45. I missed the Sierra Hut trail, and we ended up taking the fire road up to the ski hut. They bailed at that point so I did a quick push to the summit and back via Devil's backbone. 4 hours from car to summit to car. Although it would have been better to share the top with my sons, it was a great day all around.

Ran to the ridge on Bear Canyon TrailBusiness meetings got out early, so I took advantage of the opportunity in the afternoon. Should have picked an easier trail and summited.
