Pelican Butte after Aspen
Drove over to to the west side of Pelican Butte and hiked up the road (would be nice to have a high clearance vehicle to get over a couple snow spots). Great views from the top. July is definitely mosquito time in the area though.

Pelican was a Beaut
Truck stopped by snow at about 7200 but easy walking to the top. Great views in all directions. Fresh coating of ice and snow on the lookout was melting off and dropping chunks so I had to keep clear of the tower.

Aspen Butte & Pelican Butte
Drove up from the Cold Springs road in Subaru Outback. Wouldn't recommend the drive in anything less than an AWD vehicle with good tires. Very sharp rocks in the road. Views from the summit of Mt. McLoughlin, Fourmile Lake, and the Sky Lakes Wilderness. You can see the views here:

Hiked It
Started to drive my Jeep up but decided that the 4 wheel drive road would make for a nice hike. The summit was cold with really high winds. Met ATVs on the road but no other hikers. Real nice views.

Great views. Glad Mr. Wendt didn't get to build his stupid ski area here.

Hiked the 4WD Road
We drove to the beginning of the 4WD road, and just hiked that road up to the summit. Considering we were hiking on a road, it was still a really beautiful and quiet hike. Near the top, it's actually quite open and the view of the basin on one side and McLouglin on the other side are some of the best I've seen within a short drive of Klamath Falls. Highly recommended as a dayhike, though I imagine you could also camp on the summit overnight.

Great Views
The description was right on. The first 10 miles were on a great road. The last 4.5 are horrible. The views of McLoughlin were spectacular.
Drove most of the way up, then parked and walked the last mile. Hazy from wildfires. Did 6 southwest Oregon P2K's the previous day, a very long weekend of driving.

Road Hike
Hiked the Pelican Butte Road FSR 980 to the summit. It was a sunny and warm day, with good visibility. Met several ATVs on the descent.

Route: Snowshoed Access Road
Snowshoed up the access road to the first switchback then climbed up the open slopes to the summit. Nice views of the neighboring peaks through the broken clouds.

On bike
Hike-a-biked up the service road. Was able to ride maybe .6 of a mile of the 4.6 mile road. Fairly hot day. Road is fairly loose gravel and dust. Up in 1:40, down in 18 minutes, 45 seconds.

West side
Sp'er Bob Bolton and I had just finished Aspen Butte, a 12 mile effort north of Pelican Butte and so we drove up to the top of Pelican Butte to finish the day with a stellar view. A bitter cold north wind made our visit short but we located the USGS Benchmark and the highest point. Outstanding viewpoint. No climb involved but it might make a great snowshoe outing if you are truly dedicated.
