Redcloud and Sunshine via Silver Creek Trail
Beautiful clear June morning for a hike of Redcloud and Sunshine. Started from Silver Creek TH around 5:30 am. Perfect conditions. Only a couple of small snow drifts over the trail. Scarily low snow for this time of year in the San Juans.

Combo w/ Sunshine, beautiful day
Camped at Mill Creek campground ($7/night- great facilities!) then left camp ~5:30am for Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch trailhead. The road there is part of the Alpine Loop and is not for the faint of heart. My Subaru Forester got us there, but anything low or 2wd I'm sure wouldn't make it. We didn't get to the trailhead until about 6:45 (google had told us it would take 20 minutes LOL). A couple people at the trailhead scoffed at us when we said we were doing Redcloud & Sunshine, saying it was way too late to start that. We know we're decently quick so we went for it. Once on Redcloud summit, weather still looked great so went for Sunshine. Took about 50 minutes from peak to peak. Retraced our steps back over Redcloud and out.

Great hike!
Started at 7 and takes about 3 hours to get up at a normal pace. Did with sunshine and was a fun day hike. Road to get there could get tough for a 2wd but possible with a bit of clearance. Saw a big horn on the road up. Be ready for jeep traffic coming down
via Silver Creek TH with Wasatch Mountain Club group
this one & Sunshine. Silver Creek trail in places was a stream bed due to heavy rain during the night. Trail washouts were encountered in places. The drive out was an adventure as parts of the Cinnamon Pass road were damaged from flood / debris flows. We waited a few anxious minutes in the rain as a temporary road was constructed by a worker using a backhoe.
Hiked Redcloud and Sunshine via the standard route on day 2 of our mega road trip. Very smoky day made it difficult to breath and see more than a couple of miles. Camped at Mill Creek outside Lake City.

With Sunshine.
No Sunshine, though, if you do the descent off Sunshine. Do your homework. If you are with your wife, only descend Sunshine if your goal is divorce.
Only took an hour from the summit of Sunshine on the best trail of the entire day.

Longer drive than climb?
8hrs roundtrip, including traverse over to Sunshine (1hr). Elevation gain of 4110' in 5.9 miles from Grizzly Gulch TH. Apple's weather app showed only a partial cloud for Lake City so I decided to start around 1pm, "the new 6am" Regular rain spells made the afternoon cool and fresh however summit ridge winds and thunder made the traverse grueling. Just a red rock dugout atop without a survey marker to signify my 41st CO14er.

Lotsa snow
Climbed from Grizzly Gulch/Silver Creek via north face. Great snow climb while in the shade. Bagged Sunshine via the ridge. Aptly named as the snow warmed up under the intense sunshine. Postholing was a fair price to pay for the fun glissades.
We started at 6:30 AM but due to a flat tire we had to return to camp. A nice guy from Lake Comity helped us change the tire on the truck. Wayne had to go to Lake City to find a new tire. The rest of us ended up starting the hike at 8:30 AM. We nearly turned around halfway up due to the wind and also a cloudburst over Handies Peak that gave us some light hail lasting a couple minutes. We pressed on and made it to the summit at 1 PM despite the strong winds. Cree and I were first. I went on to tag Sunshine Peak. Cree waited for Liz. Shade and Nizhoni didn't quite make it to the summit. I turned around to see Cree and Liz leave the summit when I was at the saddle between the two 14ers.

Cold, Wet August Double
Hike through the basin was nice. Wind, clouds and rain picked up on the switchbacks. Didn't even stop for a photo on Redcloud; just kept walking out towards Sunshine. But there were only clouds and wind, getting colder by the minute. Visibility at both summits only 40'. Sleet (horizontal, but fortunately at our backs) started on return to Redcloud. Soaked through, I was glad not to get hypothermic. Sun finally peaked out last 30 minutes of hike!
