We had tried to save weight to the extreme. Therefore we only brought one pair of shoes each. Didn't dare to take the risk of breaking through the ice, so sometimes we walked barefoot over the frozen rivers. Better to freeze for a couple of minutes than having a huge ball of ice instead of shoes.

Re: Can't be too cold

Anything for art ;-)

The main problem at this river (and many others) was that it never really froze due to the high content of salt.

One of us usually went ahead and tried to find a safe passage, crossed, got the boots on and then the second person crossed while the first tried to get some photos.

It was also this person's task to be ready for rescuing the second if he or she fell through the ice on the larger rivers.

Re: Barefoot on ice ...

Thanks!
A bit too much adventure that time. I don't regret I did it, but thinking back to the many days up there (46) still brings back more painful memories than positive ones.
One day I hope to find the time to submit a trip report about it.

Your report

Corax, I'm really looking forward to reading your full report on your Chang Tang trip!!!

One question though: why did you get arrested when you left the Chang Tang??

Re: Your report

The photos from the journey have been sent around to magazines and I haven't had the whole set anytime since I got back home two years ago. I will put the full story online one day.

It's a very long story why we got arrested, but mainly because the police in Shuanghu didn't believe us when we told them where we had been. We had also entered a natural preserve without the proper documents. In the end the police in another, larger town understood there had been some misunderstandings and after we had paid a small fine we were released.
