Winter in Rozanski Kukovi

Winter in Rozanski Kukovi

~ Velebit / North Velebit / Rozanski Kukovi ~ In snowy period Premuziceva Staza path is completely buried under snow. Its route, which is mostly carved into cliffs, is unrecognizable. If you don't know it very well there is no way to get around. January 2006. Rozanski Kukovi in winter are only for experienced mountaineers or you should be led by only someone experienced. Wild karst terrain hides many surprises. Especially dangerous are numerous holes, hidden by snow. You have to know where they are. Photo: Aleksandar Gospic

Re: Nice Photo

Thanks 2skinners! Path is here carved into almost perpendicular cliffs, but all is covered with more than 2 meters of snow. This is usual winter situation. There are plenty of such places along the route; some sections like this are long and very exposed. Without the rope it is gamble :-) But on this day snow was just perfect and with care some sections were passable, till we reached the impossible and returned.

Here is how this section looks when it is dry:

Re: Fun Traverse

Yes, really exciting, especially without the rope, but highly risky :-) Too bad photo can't show the hole on the right!
