Mike:
Thanks a lot for the comment. It surely was a good climb. Felt good to be on top. And good luck for whenever you attempt it. You can surely get in touch with me for the details, whenever you plan on going. I went through your Guadalupe photos. They were good.
Happy Climbing !
Really? You don't know how to use a map and compass? I hope you will take the time to learn before your next mountain adventure, that's something that could obviously cost you your life next time...
Yeah, Thats a VERY IMP lesson which I have learnt in this expedition. I know how to use a map though, but have never used a compass. It surely can cost me my life...I better be sure to learn it...the sooner the better...
Thanks,

Hi:
Yes, we were using Jetboil stove, for which, obviously, we couldn't carry the pressurized cans.
But, Maribel Canchola (daughter of Senor Canchola) provided pressurized cans. You can pretty much buy everything you need on the mountain, from her.
If you have any other questions, do get back to me, and I will be more than glad to help.
right on. do you know how to get a hold of her or where to find her? my partner and i have had some pretty funny (though not at the time) experinces with fuel issues. just want to make sure we got that locked up before we go.
thanks for geting back and being so helpfull
stay up
Actually, if you see the very end of thr trip report, you will find the details of Canchola's.
I have posted their phone number, address as well as email address. Maribel speaks a little bit of English, so you can ask her about the gas over phone, but I know for sure that she carries it.
Congrats for summiting Orizaba, and great job with the trip report. I'm planning to go to Orizaba next month. My wife will accompany me, so for lodging in Tlachichuca, I am looking for a more comfortable place than a dorm. How was the comfort level of the Canchola's rooms, and do they have private bathrooms?
Also did they really charge 175 USD (or pesos?) for transportation to Piedra Grande per person? I thought this charge was more in the 50 to 100 USD range. Finally did you check the prices of the Reyes family?
Thanks so much -- answers will be much appreciated.
Sierrawolf:
Thanks for the compliments. Actually, the place Canchola's own is not exactly a dorm. They have separate rooms for everybody, and in each room, they have two separate beds, as well as a bunk bed (atleast that was how it was in our room). I never stayed at the room, but Rakesh, my friend stayed there, and one thing he definitely noticed was the absence of heaters in the room (which we are so used to in the states). So, layer-up, and cuddle inside the conforters, and you should be fine.
On the bathrooms issue, they don't have private bathrooms. There are 3-4 bathrooms, which are outside the rooms. On the price issue, I think I read a TR in which somebody was charged $150 last year, so we thought $ 175 was not bad. We didn't check prices with reyes family, as we got the contact details of Canchola's through SP, and Maribel speaks a little English (which helps a LOT!).
Do let me know in case you have any further questions. Good luck to you and your wife for Orizaba!
Just to let you know I made the trip to Mexico and just returned. We (myself and a friend) were able to summit Orizaba. I found the upper portion of the mountain steeper than I had thought. It was also icy in some spots, requiring extreme care especially on descent. Orizaba was the highest we'd ever been. My wife also came along for the acclimatization hikes and extended her personal altitude record to 16K. We stayed with the Canchola family, and were extremely satisfied with their friendly service. Many thanks to you and all SP-ers for all the info.
Best wishes,
Hi Sierrawolf:
Congrats to you and your friend. Hope you both enjoyed the climb. It indeed gets a little steeper towards the end though. The Canchola's are a friendly family (Did Senor Canchola ask for a bottle of Vodka?). Do extend my congratulations to your wife as well, for setting a new record.
Regards,
Samarth.
