Overnight on Hooknose Ridge  Sucess!

Came up from the main trailhead on Hartbauer Creek. When I got to the junction with the spur trail I was too tired to hit the peak right away, so I set up camp on Hooknose Ridge at the top of where the Flume Creek Trail/PNT hits the ridgeline. There's a nice campsite there with good hammock trees. A few steps in any direction allows for some good views too.

5 feet of snow in some places, and snowshoes would be needed for the Hooknose traverse at. Abercrombie was no problem at all though as the trail is on the south face. There was a steady snowmelt stream coming down an icicle on the north face of the summit area that would've made a great water source had I known about it the night before.

Mixed 8oz of 190 proof Everclear into 100oz of water. Nuclear hangover the next day. Hiked down around 4pm to meet a buddy. Took 2.5 hours with frequent nausea breaks. Was hungover the entire day. Don't use Everclear for mixed drinks, take the slight weight penalty of 80 proof.

The hike out, I dropped my pack at the bottom of the final spur trail and hit the summit. There was a guy camped in a tent on top. Looked awesome.

Gonna be back to hit Hooknose.

Abercrombie Mountain  Sucess!

5/23/21 - Road clear to trailhead. Last .5 mile of road has a couple points that high clearance vehicle would be best.

Check  Sucess!

This was part of a 2.5-day push on the following Washington & Idaho counties: Stevens, Pend Oreille, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai, Benewah, and Latah.

The first 4 of these are grizzly country, and I had my dogs in tow, so I resorted to one of my pet peeves: I used the external speaker on my phone. Mostly I was just listening to episodes of The Sharp End and The Enormocast.

Flume Creek  Sucess!

One of the lamer ultra-prominence peaks, but at least it was short and easy, and the nearby Canadian border crossing had the least unfriendly guard I have yet encountered.

hazy  Sucess!

went up the Abercrombie Mtn Trail FS 117. This area of Washington is quite pretty although not terribly rugged. Fires just north in Canada obscured views of the higher Selkirks to the north. I saw some turkeys and a couple of moose on the drive in but nothing on the hike except some grouse. I did carry some bear spray just in case. The road to the trailhead is in good shape and the trail itself is in good shape.

Skirting the storms  Sucess!

With my buddy Bill. To trail hed from Spokane in 2.5 hours. My first time to this corner of Washington and it was much more lush that I thought it was going to be. Saw big bolts of lightning to the west on the drive up and big storms to the south once we were above the trees but they stayed to the south of us and we didn't have a problem with weather. In fact it was supposed to be in the 90's and the storms kept it a nice cool day up there. Nice views of Old Glory Mountain and other peaks in Canada as well as over into Idaho. Great day.

Flume Creek Trail  Sucess!

The access road was tricky to find. We were in a crossover SUV and bottomed out a time or two on the way to the trailhead. The trail was in great shape. It took a little over an hour and a half to get up and we were standing on the summit at 8:30am. There was a swarm of flies so we didn't linger. The views were expansive. There was still a fair amount of snow on the ridge.

Flume Creek Trail 502  Sucess!

After speeding past the turn off for F.S. road 350, we wasted some time by driving some old logging roads before returning to Metaline for a bit of gas and to try finding the road. We found it and made it to the trail head 2 hrs later than we had hoped. Forest service rd 350 is well maintained as there is a repeater station just past the trail head. I drive a newer Toyota Tacoma and had zero problems with the access.

The trail is easy to find and is fairly well maintained, aside from the downed trees from recent storms (all easily navigated). We left the truck at 10am and topped out at 12:45pm. I have to say the spring at the first switchback is OUTSTANDING and the water is just like what I grew up drinking in the Sierras. (I personally like it better than Fern spring in Yosemite) We were alone on the mountain and only saw tracks from the previous day's hikers. We started to descend at 1:45 and made it to the truck by 3:30.

The views are great, terrain easy and manageable, and all around a good day hike. If it weren't for our 2 hours wasted, we would have hit up Hooknose Mtn, but now we have a reason to go back soon. The only animals we saw was 1 grouse, a couple of squirrels, and random birds. There is a log sheet at the trail head to sign in and out with.

Bad Road, Nice Hike!  Sucess!

I woke up very early that morning to summit Gypsy Peak, then headed to Colville to visit with some old friends. When I arrived in the city, I noticed it was only 11:00 AM and the weather forecast was good. I asked them if they would mind meeting for dinner rather than lunch, to allow me time to hike up Abercrombie that day rather then that evening or the following morning. That was fine with them. Thank goodness for the slightly revised plan, as the weather took a nasty turn that afternoon and evening after I arrived back at the truck from the hike. Also, my legs both got injured near the summit, and it was not fun hobbling 3.2 miles down the mountain, solo, with no other people nearby, with a storm approaching... but I did it. My legs appreciated my friends' offer to stay in a nice cozy guestroom bed that evening rather than a cramped truck. The views from the summit are spectacular and highly recommended, and the trail is excellent! The road is NASTY in places; bring a high-clearance vehicle! This was my 28th WA CoHP.

Trail 117  Sucess!

I was working near Colville, so I climbed this one evening with a co-worker. Good trail and nice views. We saw a small black bear near the trailhead and a toad at about 7000'.

Trail #117  Sucess!

Solo hiked to the top in light snow flurries. Wary of bears, I knocked my ice axe against a rock every couple hundred feet. Ran into a couple of hunters near the ridgetop who told me they had been trying to figure out for some time what that metallic clank was from down the mountain.
Had to slow down to pass through both a flock of turkeys and herd of cows on the Alladin Road. One farm pasture must have had close to three dozen deer in it. Cohp 44, WAhp 26.

This was a nice hike on a cool day. A little cloudy so the views weren't so great. I did see a moose on the access road.

abercrombie via 117  Sucess!

made a quick summit of this with an unexperienced friend. the paved roads going north toward silver creek road were recently repaved and in great shape. the silver creek road was still quite rough, but wider than past descriptions. I would not recommend it without a high clearance vehicle due to some deep washes (subarus would do fine). the trail has been recently cleared and was in superb shape for something so remote. wonderful day despite the large amount of haze that obscured the view.

Very easy hike to follow, trails the whole way. 3.8 miles to the top. Great workout, but well worth the views of Canada, Columbia River, and so on. It was a clear day and I could make out Mt. Spokane.

What a very nasty road to the trailhead. Getting to be just wide enough for a trail bike. needs a good brushing. Trail to Abercrombie is excellent. Great spring located just off the switchbacks with a nice pool formation. Also made the side trip to Hooknose peak from the summit.

Route Climbed: Abercrombie Mountain Trail No. 117 Date Climbed: August, 1995  Sucess!

I solo hiked this mountain, and didn't see any bears (luckily). The summit is a big rockpile, and I jumped atop one of those rock cairns to be on the highest point of Eastern Washington (about a foot higher than Gypsy Peak).

The mountain meadow halfway up the mountain is very pleasant. I recommend this peak for those wanting to "bag" a 7,000 footer without too much effort.
