Crossover route from Pasar Agung Temple
Left the trailhead at 2:30 AM and arrived at highest point at 7:30 AM. Enjoyed hot chocolate supplied by guide and views of the crater, Mt Batur and other scenery. Perfect weather! Used 2 guides as our group split up at the trail junction between the southern trail and the crossover trail. The downhill part was brutal!

Incredible climb
Started out between midnight and 1am and reached the summit around 5am, an hour before sunrise. It was absolutely frigid and the only way I survived the hour was thanks to my guide bringing some hot tea! I found the climb to be quite difficult and unrelenting in its steepness.
The climb from the Pura Pasaran Tempel is quite easy, hire a guide from Ubud to bring me up to the top. Start around 3 AM and reach the summit by around 6 AM. Great view from the summit, and amazing sunrise.
Overall and fun hike and will do it again once back to Bali.

Southern route from Pura Pasar Agung
Started from Pura Pasar Agung at midnight and reached summit shortly after 4 a.m. in perfect conditions. Guides brought some wood to make a nice warm fire on the summit, which was priceless while waiting 2 hours for the sunrise at temperatures around 5 degC.
Very nice climb with some "more technical" rock parts (maybe III (UIAA)). In general, relatively steep throughout the whole route. Dry weather recommended!
The summit view is worth the climb!

I left Tuka promptly at 7am. Getting to the foot of the mountain required 3 motorcycle rides and one long very cheap bemos ride. The last 8km was quite steep and slow going on a motorcycle, in fact, a beautiful blue butterfly was keeping pace.
I started the climb from Pura Pasar Agung around 11am. I had a quick look around the temple and then started the long hike. I heard some thunder as I approached the crater rim. I took a break and watched a pack of 20 monkeys playing within the crater at 3000m.
I traversed along the rim to the summit. This required 100% attention as the going is very loose and at times very steep. The technical crux was about 5.7-5.8. But the real crux is psychological, wondering which foot or hand hold will crumble while half your body weight depends on it. The easier & safer traverse is definitely cutting low on the SW slope and then looking for a shallow gully to take back up high.
The trail back to Besakih is indeed much longer and fairly easy to follow. I got back to Tuka around 10pm after another 3 motorcycle rides.

Beutiful Sunrise via Pasaran Temple
We were staying at Candi Dasa on this portion of our trip and took the shorter drive to Pura Pasari rather than the more popular Besakih route. Started at three in the morning and made it for sunrise. Very beautiful, could see from Java to Rinjani and the other mountains we climbed on the trip. Gunung Batur and Gunung Catur (very nice jungle route devoid of tourists with a temple near the top with monkeys!)

We started at 11pm and reached the top at 5am. While we were walking up through the rain forest in the lower section, it was pissing down with rain. At the top is was foggy, and so the view was not good. Still, a great climb!
I tried to bivy near the road but was chased away by a pack of dogs at about 9pm. Went back to town and found a cheap, bug-ridden bed. I left at about 3am to be as high as possible by sunrise. I nearly started a fight refusing all the 'guide services' but made the summit in good time and enjoyed several pleasant conversations with friendlier local folks on the descent. I was tempted, but too shy to try the hot springs...

Hired a guide, Mudi, who picked me up at my hotel at 2:30 a.m. We started at the Pura Pasaran Temple which was around 5000 ft. After offering some prayers and requesting permission from the god to climb the mountain, we began with our headlamps and by ourselves. The temperature at sea level was rather balmy but as we climbed in elevation, it got more arid and cooler which was refreshing. We continued up a path along a large lava flow and the last 500 ft was more steep. I could feel the difference in altitude, especially going from sea level to 10,000 feet in a few hours. On the way up, we passed a few people who couldn't make it.
I met a rather well-known Australian photographer, Grenville Turner, at the summit who was taking photos for a book. Someone had the gumption to try to climb around the rim of the crater. Not only is it not really feasible because of a large canyon splitting the canyon rim, it's just downright crazy! Looking down into the crater was very impressive and the walls were very, very steep. The goal was to get there for the sunrise.
A very beautiful and spiritual endeavor, especially in a setting like Bali. I highly recommend it.

Route Climbed: Besakih - summit - Besakih Date Climbed: August 14-16 2002it's my new experince to climb this mountain.
even though our team became too tired, all of us were enjoyed it.
our team consist of 6 people,all came from malang. a region placed at east java, indonesia.
Mt. Agung is very beautiful place. with it's tropical rain forest, make me like in a new world.
with it's people culture, make this place become an exciting ones.
we took 3 days to climb, and whne we went back, we met with a lot of climber that want to celebrate indonesian independence days at august 17 2002.
