Route Climbed: Arantzazu- Aizkorri- Aitxuri- Zabalaitz  Sucess!

A beautiful route.
The Aizkorri hut it was very dirty. An autentic shame!!!

Fog in the morning but good views to the basque mountains.

Zabalaitz is a beautiful mountain near Urbía with good views to Elguea, Arbelaitz, Aitxuri and Aizkorri especially.
I recommend to go to Zabalaitz summit if you go from Arantzazu.

Arantzazu-Aizkorri-Aitxuri  Sucess!

A foggy day welcomed us when we reached the campas de Urbía. I really enjoyed the climb, and bagged the summits of the three highest peaks in the massif (Aizkorri, Aketegi and Aitxuri), but will have to get back some time or other if I want to enjoy the sights.

Aizkorri-Arbelaitz  Sucess!

From Arantzazu across the Campas de Urbia it's really a nice hike. The view of the full massif from below it's great. We climbed to Aizkorri and the other 5 summits of the ridge: Aitzabal (1518m), Aketegi (1549m), Aitxuri (1551m), Iraule (1511m) and Arbelaitz (1513m). A lot of fog unfortunally in the ridge and we descent to Urbia from Arbelaitz.

Route Climbed: Urbia-San Adrian over the summit ridge Date Climbed: 14th January 2006  Sucess!

It was a beautiful winter day. Departed from Aranzazu Sanctuary at 8:45 and reached the first western summit over the 1.500 m (Arbelaitz) at 10:45 a.m. Solo. At this point I hesitated over continuing to the easter summits of the ridge due to not exactly clear weather, being alone and very much (harded) snow over the ridges. Nobody was going that way yet. After half hour waiting for a decison I decided to join another party of two men who were planning to go that way. Weather cleared up and we could also see more people coming the opposite way (from Aketegi and Aizkorri). I finally decided to follow the ridge.

I think that, due to the fact that snow was hard and the fall was possible, crampons were necessary. Nevertheless, most of the mountaineers were without them. Not me: I could easily and safely walk over the terrain. Because this I proposed to pas to the first position (of our group of three) to open the way for my companions, who were without crampons.

Aitzkorri was reached at 12:40 (with relaxed tempo). The two others went down over the south face. I went further down alone till San Adrian pass. The key-pass next to Aiztonto Altzuna (snowed and steep band traverse) was stepped to frozen and I used crampons again for about 100 m.

Route Climbed: Pto Otzaurte  Sucess!

Great day, yet with a lot of snow to the hermit of Sto Cristo (except the last rocky ridge to Aketegi and Atxuri). Great sunny day and a lot of people in the summit of Aizkorri (no people in the vertex of Aketegi). The view of the full ridge from Aitxuri is beautiful ( I want to recommend to all the mountaineers this prolongation of the climb to ridge of Atxuri, the highest point of the province, not for tourist)
