Alta-ed State  Sucess!

My Chicago lungs were not well acclimated despite 3 days in the area, and I was struggling the last 500 feet. After the glorious summit, I headed down and was a shambling wreck the last two mild miles to Wolverton.

Classic  Sucess!

Wonderful hike with my wife in Sequoia. We debated going to the lakes or Alta and I'm glad we went to Alta. Found the benchmark on a ledge on the steep side of the summit. Wind was gusty above the tree line.

Enjoyable loop hike  Sucess!

Hiked up via the Alta Peak trail, then walked down to Pear Lake and out on the Lakes Trail. Scrambled up the Watchtower on the way back to Wolverton. Beautiful, fair weather day and glorious views of the Sierra.

My First Peak in Sequoia   Sucess!

After seeing the big trees, I looked at the trail map and decided this was the only place I needed to go. I've only climbed one mountain in almost a year and a half, so it was good to get back to the high country. The weather was much different than Feb. climbing in the Northwest! Warm and sunny with only patches of snow. Soon after the 2.1 mile sign, I made it to the open meadow and the slope leading up to the summit ridge. Easy terrain to a spectacular view. Highly recommended.

Excellent hike  Sucess!

I can see why Alta is so popular... the summit is more elevated than it looks from below, and give a wonderful soaring feeling. Summit registers (plural) were chock full, but the ammo box has rusted through in the water-filled granite pothole where it's been placed. Was glad to get an hour on the summit with a very congenial bunch before the gasping hordes came up the trail.

Weather was outstanding, but smog continued to fill up the valley until you couldn't see the bottom.

From Pear Lake

Climbed from Pear Lake to the saddle near "Winter Alta Peak". My buddy Mike Chen made it to the summit, while I descended with my friend Todd who experienced a serious anxiety attack.

Trail  Sucess!

Tremendous views from the summit! Pretty busy on the trail and on top. Visited the nearby General Sherman Tree afterwards back in the land of paved trails and selfie sticks.

From Wolverton  Sucess!

Very popular peak, I counted at least 8 entries in the summit register before mine on this holiday weekend. On descent I hit Panther Peak and then cross country back to Wolverton. This was a most enjoyable hike.

Very nice day hike  Sucess!

During late summer 2015, I was staying in the area with a friend an we decided to hike up some of the mountains in the park. Alta Peak was a very nice but also very long day hike from Wolverton. The hike itself is not very difficult and no climbing skills are required to reach the summit.

Fun "Winter" Day hike  Sucess!

Hiked solo from Wolverton President's day weekend, took about 3 hours to summit. Trail is in good shape, little bit of snow before Panther gap but nothing troubling. More snow after the split for the summit trail, and then the last 700 or so vertical feet were covered. Hiked the snow field without crampons or snowhshoes, just followed someone elses tracks and used the exposed granite to get to the top. Gorgeous day, gorgeous views. First time up this peak and it was a ton of fun. first real "winter" climb but winter conditions certainly weren't prevailing.
