Anchor Near Summit Plateau

It's always with some regret that I see these in wilderness settings, but this good anchor did save me some zig-zagging and about 80 feet of sketchy downclimbing on steep, loose rock, and it meant I didn't need to leave a sling behind. Zion National Park, Utah-- April 2014

It's an interesting question...

...and very difficult to solve, also here in the Alps! Fixed anchors do violate the wilderness, but sometimes help people to do a safe climb...

In many wilderness areas here, it is now illegal to install new bolts and other fixed gear, but you can still replace existing ones.
