Angel's Landing while Backpacking
Backpacked 3 days for 47 miles across Zion from Lee Pass at Kolob Canyon to East Entrance in June 2008. On Friday night (June 13), I had camped at West Rim Campsite #1. In the morning (June 14), I hiked 2 miles over to Scout's Lookout. Then I summitted Angel's Landing (pack free) with only my camera. Then I backpacked another 14 miles down the trail, up the valley, up the East Rim trail to East Entrance. It was actually kinda weird hiking down to Scout's Lookout instead of up to it. My legs felt remarkably fresh on Saturday despite having backpacked 26 miles the day before.

Standard Trail
Hiked with my wife and son (baby in the backpack) for the first 2 miles, then continued to the summit on my own. The trail is spectacular with great views looking both north and south along Zion Canyon, but the crowds were a bit frustrating. I passed several petrified tourists who were clinging to the chains the entire time, but I thought the trail was wide enough for two lanes of traffic the majority of the time, and only steep enough to warrant the use of hands in a couple places.

As Good As They Say
I've been hearing about this hike for years. Finally made it on a beautiful April morning in lieu of a golf outing on a business trip. Started early to beat the heat and did a side trip up the West Rim Trail and around to the small waterfall on the east side of Cathedral Mountain.
Love this hike. I'm terrified and fascinated of heights at the same time. This is a perfect place. Had the summit to myself one August evening 2002. Decending in the dark was a bit nerve inducing for me though.

Spectacular!
J and I came up here in the middle of summer with full packs in 100+ degree heat. Absolutely spectacular hike on the ridgeline, exposure is dizzying. We continued on another four miles on the West Rim trail before realizing our campsite didn't have any water. Right around then we realized camping out wasn't gonna work and backtracked the five miles back to the trailhead sans water.
My husband and I took the first shuttle bus into the park on a beautiful September morning. We wanted to be the first up Angel's Landing that morning. I had to use the restroom at the bus stop (my husband was a bit miffed for delaying the hike), had to pass people on the trail and eventually made it to Chicken Out Point. We saw plenty of people sitting and looking, not too many folks going to the top. We didn't see anything difficult about "the crux", and made our way to the top. Loved having the summit to ourselves for close to half an hour. After this hike, we made our way down to the Virgin River for another hike. Great day.
One of the most amazing hiking trails I've ever done, I could tell by the twisting in my stomach. Start Early though, I've done this early and at 'rush hour' and you practically have to stand in line to get up and negotiating some of those steps with a bunch o' folk can be a bit pressing.

Nice hike, great views
Started off hiking it with my daughter on my back in a carrier and my wife. We were going slowly and safely. Some lady made a comment to herself (that my wife heard) regarding how crazy, poor child. My daughter was having fun, but my wife got sketched out from the comment and forced us all to go back to the "safe" area where she and my daughter stayed while I hiked to the top and back.

Went by trail 2x; first in 2001, pre-brain damage, and again in 2007, post-brain damage. It was an interesting contrast. As long as I kept artificially alert, there was no real change; both times I didn't touch the chains. But in 2007, I nearly tripped and fell several times while walking on level, seemingly innocuous stretches.

Owen Garland and I did Prodigal Sun in May or June of 1999. We aided just about all of it, even though there are a couple of sections of 5.8. It's tough to switch between aid and free with all of that crap hanging off you. The river crossing can be tricky if the water is high (collect up some sticks to use as ski-poles to steady you). We did the first 4 pitches on day 1, slept in the portaledge, did the next 4 pitches plus the couple hundred feet of dirty scrambling to get to the top well after dark (we're no aid speed demons). We bivvied and then hiked down on day 3. It's a great aid route for novice aiders like us. The only other aid routes we'd done to practice were Mordor Wall and Glass Menagerie. We later tried Space Shot, but bailed when it started raining and the sandstone started turning into mud (scary). Then we went to Vegas and saw Star Wars Episode 1.

First Zion Day
First day, told friend we should hike to Emerald Pools - then (heh-heh) convinced him that we might as well go up Angels Landing. He was doubtful on the chains the way up but glad at the top.

1st climb in Zion
Beautiful hike. Loved the steep section with the enourmous drop-offs on either side. Got an early start to beat the major heat, but not earlier enought to beat the major crowds of a saturday. I bet this would make for a wicked full moon hike. I'll have to come back to try that.

Got an early start and was up in about 45 minutes... I like heights, so didn't need the chains. Too many people coming up when I was going down. Still a fun hike...

Start EarlyOne of the most amazing hiking trails I've ever done, I could tell by the twisting in my stomach.
