Trip Report Ankogel (3246 m)
(2005. begginning of May, 5 young men, 3 days)
1st day: from Mallnitz Ankogel-Bahn start-station (1191 m) to Hannoverhaus (2719 m), 5 hours, weather: light rain then light snowstorm,+8 Celsius to -4 Celsius
Met police patrol at parking, reporting bad weather+nobody on the hill+ski season over. We told our destination and plan. 9am ascent: crossed a creek, pine forests, empty ski-tracks following the route, scrogs, first knee-deep snow, Ankogel-Bahn mid-station (1989 m). Going on along cables of the cable car, some rocks, open snow fields, light snowstorm, low visibility, route cornering a rock mass to right, facing Maresen Spitz (2916 m), Ankogel-Bahn top-station (2650 m), +70 m steep go till Hannoverhaus (2719 m), snowstorm over, Ankogel peak clear, 2pm. At the winterroom: door blocked from inside by snow, hinges hard-ice frozen. Took half an hour ice-pick work to free door. Too late for a there and back safe summiting. Three hours later 3 guys arrive exhausted, without equipment. They want to go on evening to Hochalmspitze (3360 m) through Ankogel! Hard suggest not to. They go back direction Mallnitz. Evening -14/0 Celsius outside/inside. Local mouse distroying our reserves. Huge wind at midnight.
2nd day: from Hannoverhaus (2719 m) to direction Ankogel and back to Hannoverhaus, 6 hours, weather: snowstorm, -5 Celsius
Snowstorm in the morning, visibility zero. 10am try nr. 1: back down to Ankogel-Bahn top-station, no route-sign visible because of high snow, no map navigation possible because of snowstorm low visibility, blind go through snow/ice platou of Grauleitenspitze (2891 m), dead end, turn back to Ankogel-Bahn top-station. 1pm try nr. 2: snowstorm lightening, map navigation till Goslarer Weg possible, we loose track on Lassacher Kees snowfield, returning to top-station. 4 pm, storm over, Ankogel clear, sunshine, full panorama, exhausted. Up to Hannoverhaus, night -15/0 Celsius outside/inside. Mouse back again, wind at midnight.
3rd day: from Hannoverhaus to Mallnitz Ankogel-Bahn start-sation, 2.5 hours, weather: heavy snowing then sunshine, 0 Celsius to +10 Celsius
Heavy snowing in the morning, waiting to a 3rd try to summiting. 11 am. still snowing, too much snow, avalanche danger, descending the same route as upway. At forest level sunshine, snow melted. Refreshning in creek before reaching parking, 1pm.
Essential equipment we needed: shell (waterproof-windproof-breathable, top-bottom-gloves-gaiters), polar (for night and when not walking, top-bottom), ski mask-goggles-sun cream (min. factor 30), semi hard boots-crampons-ice pick-snowshoes-walking poles, map-compass-thermometer-fire-knife-headlamp, sleeping bag (min. comfort -5 Celsius)-matracce, gas stove-big mug (for food as well)-spoon.
We checked weather before start: www.wetter.at at skiwetter/bergwetter session
